It’s All About The Journey

Can you guess where you’re headed?

You arrive at the airport nice and early, as usual.

The rumble of the wheels of your case over the pavement is a welcome sound — the sound of vacation.

Check-in opens in 30 minutes, you hang around people-watching and grab a snack from the overpriced convenience shop.

You wait in line at the check-in desk and you’re the first to be called.

You make your way to the bougie airport lounge and sit on one of the plush leather sofas. The buffet counter is brimming with treats and snacks of all kinds.

What should you pick? A yoghurt parfait with muesli? A packet of Kettle crisps? A mini ham and cheese croissant? The choice is yours.

You carefully select a mini croissant, fresh mango and pineapple and get your favourite coffee from the machine — a vanilla latte.

Glancing around, you see a mix of people.

A smart-looking businesswoman wearing a light pink blazer suit, black high heels and a pair of large tortoiseshell reading glasses.

Her dark brown hair tumbles over her shoulders as she scrolls through the latest news updates and sips her black coffee.

Over to your right, there’s a family. A Mum, Dad and kid — probably around 10. The table is silent, all of them are engrossed in their phones. The little girl is sweet, with her jet black hair cut into a bob with a full fringe.

A group of middle-aged men strut into the lounge, breaking the serenity of the atmosphere, chuckling to each other while they look for somewhere to sit. A business meeting or a stag-do? It’s hard to tell.

You avert your gaze and focus on your breakfast. What a treat to have such a selection of food to choose from this early in the morning. No preparation or washing up for you today.

The sweet juices of the pineapple explode in your mouth and soon the plate is empty.

Check the departures board.

You’ve got over an hour before you board. Plenty of time for another helping of breakfast.

Go to Gate 7.

You board the flight at the front and find row 24. That’s the trouble, flying solo, you’re unlikely to get a row to yourself.

You sit down next to a kind-looking old man, you exchange smiles and a quick hello and get your book out.

Beautiful World, Where Are You — By Sally Rooney.

You’re about a quarter of the way through the book, not really into it but it’s one you’ve been meaning to finish.

The flight is short, just over 2 hours, the pilot announces.

Your luggage is small and your smile is huge as you step off the plane into the balmy Spanish sunshine.

You’ve arrived.

It’s time to switch off. Relax.

Just a quick taxi ride to the hotel and before you know it, you’re sipping a sexy, spicy margarita next to the infinity pool that overlooks the Mediterranean sea.

This is just what you needed.

Take a deep breath in.

Breathe out and feel your stress melt away, as the hot sun warms your bronze complexion.

If only vacations like this could last forever…

Or can they?
