It’s About The Passion

A True Reason To Write On Medium

There are way too many articles on Medium about how you can make money. Heck, there are tons of YouTube videos about how to make money on Medium. Yes, you can make money on Medium; I get it.

Excellent idea, write and make money. You’re good at it, so why shouldn’t you get paid for it? I mean, I’ve been a musician for almost 50 years now, and I haven’t made a stink from it. Yet I hear all this great stuff about how I can make money writing and publishing articles on Medium.

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY

How many times have you heard that quote regarding a free agent athlete due to sign a contract larger than the Gross Domestic Product of a small nation? That passion drives the ,athlete? He says he’d play for free (until the agent interrupts the press conference) because he loves the sport, the team, the city. Consider, though, the kid that had such passion for the sport when he wasn’t being paid. He’d never have gotten to the point of being paid gazillions if he hadn’t persevered when there was no money in it. If he hadn’t traded family dinner for the gym, or time with friends with another showcase for scouts, or pulled the all-nighters to keep her grades up for academic eligibility.

WRITE BECAUSE YOU WRITE, NOT TO MAKE MONEY

Did you come to Medium to make money writing? Was that your motivation? If so, you’ll be disappointed. You won’t get rich quickly.

If you didn’t think you were a “writer” first, that’s okay. You may have a passion for it but didn’t consider yourself a “writer,” but you’ve been keeping a journal and writing a blog for your company, drafting articles for your church’s annual newsletter. You’ve been a writer. You’ve had something to say with the written word.

Maybe suddenly you realized that you had something of value to send out to the world via this vehicle called Medium. (Yep, that’s me!) Great! Welcome! Let’s go!

Just don’t get the notion that it’ll fund a college education if you get your 100 followers and post 100 articles in 100 days. Be true to yourself, be honest with yourself. Be a passionate writer. You’ll thank yourself for it.
