It’s about chocolate and people. Not one or the other.

Yesterday, I watched ‘Wonka’ with my partner – it was delightful and surprising to follow his musical journey towards becoming the famous inventive chocolatier genius we know. There was a quote in the movie that sat with me during the night, though: “It’s not the chocolate that matters. It’s the people you share it with”. Beautiful, isn’t it? While it has its meaning in the movie, I disagree with it in real life.

I see chocolate as the reason people gather: whether to make it, or to enjoy it, or to talk about it. In our professional paths in life, this means companies we work with, roles we choose to perform, industries we enjoy working in, and communities we connect with. The chocolate creates movement, so it does matter. Depending on our individual liking, we’ll gravitate towards different chocolate – and hence, different people.

Looking back, I moved on from workplaces with bitter chocolate taste, but with great people around them. Conversely, I also found beautiful chocolate surrounded by interactions that were not making me savour the best of it.

It’s not about one or the other.

It’s about finding the flow in both – that’s where the beauty and the challenge of our lives are.

Are you around a wonderful ‘Wonka’ chocolate right now?

Who’s around your chocolate?
