Its a weapon first

Call It A Weapon
Sometimes we hear the term Self Defense tool. While this might be true just the implication that it is a tool sets up questions.
How to use it?
What can it be used for?
Can it really hurt someone?
Will it work this time?
Should I use it for this?
It doesn’t look like a weapon!
All of these thoughts take time.
In a real-life attack, we don’t have the luxury of time. It happens fast. If we are thinking of these things we might not react quickly enough.
My fellow instructor says. First in the mind. Then in the body. Then in the world.
When you call it a weapon the name implies what it is right from the start. It might have other uses but its first intent is a weapon. This eliminates some of the time before deployment.
First in the mind. We must decide what the intent of the item is. If it is already known as a weapon that is one less step in the process.
When we move it into the body we have the intention to harm someone. That is what weapons do.
As we put it into the world it’s intended use happens. The mindset of being a weapon is already there. No matter what it looks like it is a weapon first. It will be used to harm someone. It doesn’t matter if it is used as a distraction or in sequence with other moves to end the attack.
Self-defense is a choice that starts with awareness. When you are aware you can decide how to react. When you react do it with intent. Use your weapons as they were intended. Use them to harm someone enough to get away.
