It’s A Reminder
Of the past and what is to come

A hematoma remains in the antecubital fossa Where constant poking and prodding have taken place An even darker pigment next to my brown skin A reminder of how life can suddenly change
One minute you’re living life without limitations You can do whatever you mind and body chooses The next, your mind-body connection is lost You’re no longer able to do as you please
It came out of nowhere Like a thief Stealing the parts of me The ones that allowed me to live
It gave no thought to the repercussions I would endure Forcing my body to change It didn’t ask any permission from me
There are limits on what I am able to do but instead I focus on being thankful Death has whispered in my ears, calling me home I’ve even seen it standing at my door
That hematoma will be gone in a few days Until another is introduced in its place It’s one of the things that I now have to go through It’s a check to ensure My body’s system Isn’t failing too soon
Life can change at any second Nothing is for certain No point in dwelling on that spot near my vein I can only thank medicine and God That I am still breathing It means I’m still alive to witness another day
In 2019, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called Hypocomplement Urticarial Vasculitis. It has no cure and my life changed drastically. Despite everything else, I am still moving forward and living life to the best of my ability. Don’t feel sorry for me. The painting in this poem was selected as a finalist for a rare artist competition. Voting ends on October 31st. If you would like to vote for my piece, click the link below and vote for Intensity.
