Itaewon will be “safer” by September 2023. Here’s why.

To avoid a repeat of last year’s Halloween stampede tragedy, Korea intends to improve its pavement and set up CCTV cameras to aid in the smooth flow of crowd traffic.
Within the Itaewon special tourism zone, a road repair project was put out to bid by the Yongsan District Office.
The “repair region” comprises of:
- Exit 1 of the Itaewon subway station
- The cramped lane next to the Hamilton Hotel
- Alleyways with antique furniture shops and international food stalls.
The district office will also be paving the roads with asphalt concrete to make the roads less slippery.
Furthermore, the area will have 70 CCTVs that are equipped with AI technologies to monitor crowd density and spot warning indicators of crowd management issues.
All these will be ready by September 2023.
Safe enough?
We shall see.
