It was the way they said it
A poem on worrying for a friend

Psychedelic and painful, isn’t it- That trying to write when they’re in pain. Worry washes over you so you wash your face. The words are anxious and dance across the page: Hexagonal rotation, colours from your eyelids escape.
In the dark of the night When the household’s eyes are all closed And you watch them as you try not to weep; The tears drip and lash at your cheeks; Nothing helps and you can’t fall asleep.
Heartache- is it your demise- Your favourite C.D Plays over your C.O.D As you try to figure out why? ‘It tolls for thee’. You rewind the DVD
In your mind. It’s digital, isn’t it? Everything's digital these days- The mind is also, technically. But you’re glad and you reach for your phone And stare at the bright light.
You ask if they’re alright. And the panic lingers But now there’s enough space in your head To get a good night’s rest- About two hours- four with a double espresso To unwind your distress.
You ask if they’re okay And your body stops shaking And tomorrow you both speak again, As though you were both faking, As though you’d never wept And as though you had both slept- Like thunderclouds adrift, Indifferent to what they left.
Two days later, they responded to the text. They told you all their issues And their issues you addressed. You told them all your problems, How you coped with wanting death. A message came in a bottle the next day- A ‘thank you’- Carried by their breath.
