It was a funny old war.
My dad only told me the funny side of his war experience.
This is one of them.
He was a radio operator on a high-speed motor launch used for air, sea rescue.
Apart from keeping his boat in touch with the shore, other ships and aircraft, he was responsible for the upkeep of the boat’s radio.
On one occasion he needed a replacement part for his radio. I have no memory of what the part was, let’s call it a gizmo.
This gizmo had to be delivered in a wooden crate.
For some reason only known to air ministry or the government, my dad had to put in two requisitions. One for the gizmo and one for the crate. (Can you see where this is going?)
He did as requested and was informed the gizmo was not in stock.
But they sent the empty crate.
You had to laugh.
