Medium Writing Tips
It Took Me a over a Year to Break 1,000 Fans — but I Did It!
Celebrating the milestones

Although I’ve preached about the importance of fans in previous articles, it is rarely a statistic I focus on, when monitoring my own stats.
This is mainly because I write on Medium to: (1) Build a portfolio of useful content (2) Provide free content so that authors aren’t taken advantage of by unscrupulous writers who charge for services that are vastly over priced or are utterly worthless; and (3) Because I love seeing how many new people I can reach in my various non-Medium related publications.
So I was surprised when I checked my dashboard looking for my latest views when I noticed a pleasant surprise:

I saw that I had over 1,000 fans! To be more specific, 1,054 fans over the last 30 days.
Note: When authors on Medium refer to how many fans "they got" they are typically referring to this 30 day total. This is not an amazing feat by upper echelon Medium writer standards, but pretty cool for me!
The main reason I’m writing this post is to remind new writers that I started writing in July of 2018. So even this modest success did not happen overnight.
Granted, I don’t really focus on optimizing my earnings (note my disproportionately high views), but even if I had, I think it still would have taken me about a year to achieve this.
I don’t write (much) viral content, but I do write useful content, and it’s spread across dozens of publications.
I consistently engage with readers and try to improve the Medium community.
That is the secret to my (modest) level of success. Thank you to everyone who helped me reach this milestone!
