It’s not just the ladies who suffer from hand issues; men can be plagued by them just as easily. Our hands are vital tools in our tech-savvy lives, yet we tend to overlook their needs.

This week, my partner — after visiting the doctor because his hand were feeling a ‘little thumbder’ the weather! He was diagnosed with a trigger finger — and no, it’s not because he’s a gunslinger.

Aside: The scientific name for trigger finger is Stenosing Tenosynovitis. Pronounced. Don’t say you don’t learn things on Medium.com!

His occupation as a computer engineer only exacerbates the issue; coding and clicking all day is not helping his cause.

Naturally, I dove deep into research, thinking I could be his saviour. He didn’t want me to play doctor and instead assigned me to be his personal hand masseuse. But let’s get one thing straight — it’s not what you’re thinking!

What is a trigger finger?

What is a trigger finger? After researching it, here is my child-like analogy: Always a teacher!

Think of a lorry going through a tunnel. The tendons are like the lorry, and the tunnel is like a sheath surrounding them. When the lorry works properly, it slides smoothly through the tunnel, allowing your fingers and thumb to move easily.

But when the lorry becomes inflamed, it can swell and get stuck in the sheath, like a lorry getting caught in a narrow tunnel.

This can make it difficult to move your fingers and thumb, and in some cases, it may even cause them to lock in a bent position, similar to a lorry getting tied in a knot.

Anyways…

Anyway, my partner’s hands are currently screaming in agony, and I have taken it upon myself to rescue them from him from his misery. Okay, not screaming yet, but it could get there. I’m like a knightess in shining armour but for hands.

This is my calling, my destiny, my raison d’être. At least until next week when I inevitably find a new cause to champion.

Besides, I have been reading up on how to do a DIY operation on his hands, but he refuses to have surgery! All I have to do is make a slight incision and then reduce the size of the swollen tendon, but oh no, as normal, he does not trust me! Something about the fact that I teach maths and am not a surgeon!

That’s why I wanted to write this article — to remind you of the importance of paying attention to your hands.

We use them every day, from typing on a keyboard to scrolling through social media, but we rarely think about how to keep them healthy.

Did you know that our hands are incredibly complex structures made up of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments? Yup, it’s true! The bones of the hand include the wrist bones, metacarpal bones, and phalanges.

Did you know that 27 bones in the human hand and around 30 muscmuscles control movement?

You’ll be well-prepared for hand questions next time you’re at a pub quiz. Just remember to give praise to Sophia Tell for this random fact!

The muscles and tendons of the hand allow us to move our fingers and thumb, grip objects, and perform fine motor tasks. The ligaments in our hands provide stability to the joints and help prevent injuries.

Who knew that hand contained so much stuff?

Hand conditions

There are many different conditions that can affect our hands, from minor injuries to chronic conditions.

Some of the most common hand conditions include tendinitis, which is inflammation of the tendons in the hand, usually caused by repetitive motions.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is another condition that occurs when the median nerve in the wrist is compressed, leading to pain, numbness, and weakness in the hand and wrist.

We also have arthritis, which is a chronic condition that causes inflammation in the joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.

Lastly, there’s my partner’s trigger finger, which is a condition that causes one or more fingers to become stuck in a bent position, making it difficult to straighten them — well, you know about this one as I did explain the lorry and the tunnel at the start — do keep up. Lol 😉

What does the research say

Did you know some studies have found a link between hand disorders and increased computer and cell phone use?

A study conducted in a rural area analysed patient records to determine the incidence of hand disorders. They found that trigger finger was the most common disorder, followed by carpal tunnel syndrome, de Quervain’s disease, and Dupuytren’s disease.

The incidence rates of hand disorders increased over time, particularly for trigger finger, and were associated with an increase in the number of people employed in services requiring computer and cell phone use. Women were affected more frequently than men, and the condition typically required surgical intervention between 50 and 69 years old.

Finally, I know hand problems can be excruciating and debilitating.

If you or anyone suffers from hand problems, consult a healthcare professional — you do not have to live with the pain. There are many treatment plans available to you.

I hope you all have a pain-free and fabulous day. Let’s keep those hands healthy and happy!
