Summary

The article argues that the United States must break from its oppressive history characterized by the dominance of elite white men and work towards creating a society that truly embodies liberty and justice for all, including women, people of color, and nature.

Abstract

The text presents a critical perspective on the historical foundations of the United States, highlighting the hypocrisy of the Founding Fathers who espoused liberty and justice while simultaneously owning slaves and committing genocide against Native Americans. It underscores the ongoing struggle for equality, pointing out that a minority party of white men currently seeks to maintain power through corrupt means, including court-packing and voter suppression. The article emphasizes the need for a collective break from this brutal past, advocating for the realization of the Declaration of Independence's promise of freedom and justice for all. It calls for the recognition of the full humanity and rights of every individual, regardless of race or gender, and the inclusion of nature as a living entity deserving of respect. The author asserts that only by dismantling the structures that uphold white hegemony, including the US Constitution and conservative religious institutions, can the nation achieve true liberty and justice for all.

Opinions

  • The Founding Fathers' legacy is marred by their participation in slavery and genocide, which contradicts their proclamations of liberty and justice.
  • The current political landscape is influenced by a minority group of white men attempting to preserve their dominance through dishonest tactics.
  • The US Constitution is criticized for entrenching the rule of elite white men and enabling the subjugation of women, people of color, and nature.
  • The for-profit prison system is seen as a modern form of slavery, particularly affecting black individuals.
  • The article suggests that the promise of the Declaration of Independence has not been realized for all citizens, as systemic racism and sexism persist.
  • The author advocates for a reimagined society that extends liberty and justice to everyone, including the environment, and challenges the historical institutions that perpetuate inequality.
  • The text calls for active participation in democracy, despite the challenges of gerrymandering and voter suppression, to elect leaders who will represent and fight for the rights of all people.
  • The author believes that the potential for a truly equitable society exists within the American populace, and that the concept of "all" must include every demographic and nature itself.

It is Time to Break History

In the US we stand at the perfect movement to break our connection with our brutal history. If we do not break this history, it will break us.

What history?

Our Founders spoke of liberty and justice for all but held black people as slaves and exterminated Native American Peoples. All women were slaves too. What? Slaves inherit their condition by birth. They do not have their own names, but the names of their masters. They are traded for political and economic gain. They cannot rule themselves. This was the condition of all women on Earth until very recently.

So, elite whitemen ruled the People in the USA. They did whatever they wanted to the rest of us. That means all people who were not white and all women. It especially means the black people who were kidnapped from their homes and broken to the slave life and Native Peoples who experienced genocide and the loss of their ancestral homeland.

Today a minority party of whitemen rule over a diverse nation and seek to return us to exclusive rule by whitemen. Their rule has been achieved by cheating, attempting to overthrow the 2020 election, and the slave-owner sympathetic rules of governance set forth in our Constitution.

Let’s just admit that our Constitution cements minority elite whiteman rule.

This is why self-serving well-connected, well-off whitemen have been able to pack our courts such that those sympathetic to whiteman rule (corporatists, religionists, all politicians including many liberals who are closet sexists and racists) will strike down any law not sympathetic to whiteman rule.

These people want to return all of us to an updated form of the society that inseminated our Founding documents. Let’s say it again: elite whiteman rule, the reconfiguring of the subordination of all women (will the new conservative lady Justice simply rubber-stamp what her whiteman betters require?). Certainly, we see this writ large in the for-profit prison system that has been set up by whitemen, which produces de facto instead of actual slavery for black people. This industry is turning a large profit. We see the continued oppression of Native Peoples, and the continued destruction of Nature to make whitemen rich. Whiteladies are for this. Anne Coulter supports taking the vote away from women.

Today white police kill black men over small matters when they would take a whiteman in a similar situation alive. To be a black man in this country is to be a target from cradle to grave. The lives of Black women are grim. Same for Native Peoples.

To save ourselves (anyone female or not a whiteman) we have to break our connection to our brutal past. We have to envision and create a different society, the society our slaveholding, genocidal Founders could dream up but could not make real for all the People.

(Liberty and justice for all, but the all meant only elite whitemen, who were free to enslave and murder because only they mattered).

This is why the whitemen of the past and their bondsmen and bondswomen nor their descendants today could make liberty and justice for all of us a reality. Only they matter in their minds. The rest of us are merely useful idiots or inconveniences to be neutralized. That includes any white person who does not agree with or want to be a part of whiteman society.

If we want the world inherent in the Declaration of Independence, only we can make that real.

There are more people of diverse races, genders, and political views in this country than those who want to subordinate us to their every whim at terrible cost to individual liberty, justice, and the pursuit of a life worth living.

What do we have to do to break our connection with our brutal past and those who lust to return all of us to it?

Respect those we may not understand but recognize as fully human with all the rights that implies.

This can empower us to create a country that at last supports a life worthy of the epithet freedom and justice for all?

Then we can step off the cliffs of our fears and find they are no cliff but the way forward.

Sure vote, even though our votes have been watered down or negated by fifty years of ruthless gerrymandering and outright voter suppression, now enabled by the Supreme Court.

Here in 2020, we have voted and the GOP is working hard to make sure our votes are rejected. In spite of all this, Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris and their diverse team will prevail to lead our nation from the brink of a return to the prison that is our past.

Finally, we need to realize that the People of the USA have always had the potential to supersede the ancient tendency to elevate the ruler classes over the rest of us and Nature. It has just taken time to begin to become a daily reality for all of us.

Many of the current crop of whitepeople in the USA are fighting back against the unintended consequences of liberty and justice for all. Some of us are fighting for what is implied for All of Us in the Declaration of Independence.

The keyword is All.

All include males of all ethnicities, all women, all children, and Nature, because Nature is a living being. In this system, all whitepeople have the same rights as All of Us.

When we break the white hegemony that is rooted in whitepeople’s historical institutions,

which include the US Constitution and their conservative religions,

when we declare our independence from these old systems,

we will, at last, be able to create and maintain

liberty and justice for All.

We can realize that no group supersedes the rest of us and Nature.

We can keep the high words of our flawed Founders deep in our hearts and minds, and walk toward the symbols of our deepest hopes in thought, word, and deed.

Finally, we must never give up no matter how many generations it takes to form the more perfect Union that truly includes All of Us.
