Israel Is At War

My Brother And His Wife are safe in Jerusalem.

Israel map from Wikipedia, Gavriel, and Yehudit Sanders in Jerusalem, Israel.

Hundreds are dead, and thousands are wounded in the war that broke out over the weekend.

A few months ago, Gavriel and his wife Yehudit moved to Israel. Because Gavriel converted and became an Orthodox Jew from Pentecostal Christianity, qualifying him as an Israeli citizen took three years. He’s been Jewish for almost twenty-five years (recognized), but he has been Jewish his whole life. He’s now a Rabbi who teaches ancient Hebrew.

My brother is also the host of Mah Nishma (What’s Up) with Gavriel Sanders. His show focuses on man’s relationship with G-d.

As I began putting this piece together, I realized this could have just as easily been written about all the many aspects of war. Instead, I wanted it to be more upbeat. Most importantly, my brother and his wife, Yehudit, are alive.

War in that part of the world is always inevitable. Over the past 3,000-plus years, this has been true.

Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time in the Middle East. For a time, I was President of an international oil company.

In that regard, my flight was hijacked in Kuwait in 1983. I was on my way to meet with the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and a delegation of his people to discuss oil reserves.

The wars, skirmishes and such are less visible today. At least, that was true until this past weekend.

There will still be unrest when it is all said and done and peace has been restored. Unfortunately, for thousands of years, there has been “unrest.” In Israel, they’re singing and saying: “Am Yisrael Chai,” a Hebrew phrase that translates to “The people of Israel live.” It signifies that the Jewish nation will continue to live on despite the world’s attempts to exterminate it throughout its 3,000-year history.

Tell me, how is this upbeat or positive?

While most of us are not in the middle of this or any other conflict or war, we are often at odds with our own thinking. How does that make you feel? Alive, I hope. Feeling this way is positive. Conflict within one’s own soul or in one's mind is actually normal. Free agency is alive and well, and we each have the ability to analyze circumstances for ourselves.

War means that communication has failed. Has it within you? What do you intend to do?

Communication is at the heart of every misunderstanding, battle, conflict, and certainly war.

This is the Point

If you want to communicate properly, ensure both sides have the proper information. Too simple? The answers to some of life’s greatest issues are often simpler than you think.

Personally

I don’t want war. I don’t even like conflict. In Vietnam, I couldn’t help but see the effects of war. When our son Doug was in Afghanistan for the fourth tour of duty, he was injured. He made it, but the only thing we can do is PRAY. What I pray for is, of course, between me and God or Hashem. May I ask that we pray?

Thanks for reading,
