Isn’t It Time for People-Centered Leadership?

How leaders lead matters greatly to our world

Leaders can struggle with a multitude of priorities. This can make decision-making difficult. Which stakeholder is more important? Which challenge should be tackled first? How should I work with my team?

Leaders must sort through all of these issues. One principle can help every leader better manage their efforts.

Valuing people helps leaders sort through the many problems that they will confront daily.

When we treat everyone with dignity, we set the stage for making the best decision in each moment. When we value others, we treat them with kindness and in a way that reflects how we want to be treated. This allows us to move forward, address immediate priorities, and consider the human impacts of our decisions and actions.

Lesson to Learn

Leaders are responsible for so many things. It can be overwhelming at times. How does a leader proceed?

They attempt to prioritize what needs to be done and when. They turn to others for their insights and help. They create action plans and move forward.

When a leader values everyone, this allows them to keep their eye on the human impact of decisions and actions.

It is the value that must always be present to create the highest order efforts needed to be successful. When we value others, we understand that today’s decisions must be compatible with our interaction with others into the future.

Building long-term relationships and success is about working with others. Taking their interests into account during the decision-making process helps significantly in ensuring long-term success.

Answer for Me

I have learned that people-centered leadership is the best form of leadership. All leaders must produce tangible results. However, obsessing over short-term results will rob us of essential relationships needed for long-term success.

When I value people, I will seek better solutions to meet the needs of them as I lead.

When I listen to others and take their needs into account, I make better decisions, follow better action plans, and achieve better outcomes. An attitude of caring for others has served me well and is what I see in the best leaders.

Action

As you consider your leadership actions, ask yourself how this impacts others. Who are the stakeholders? What do they want? How will they be affected? If you are not sure, ask them. The broader the view you have, the better your preparation and execution will be.

When you include as many people’s interests as possible, you will achieve better outcomes now and lay the groundwork for future success.

Leading with a people-centered lens expands your view and gives you the greatest chance of leading meaningful and long-term success efforts.

Daily Action

Each day affirm your belief that everyone matters. Start with your own affirmations.

When we value ourselves and others, we become the person we most want to be.

Who are you when you are at your best? Who do you most want to become? Who in your life helps you be at your best? In what ways can you affirm others today, helping them be their best versions of themselves.

The Golden Rule was created to bind us all together. Why? Because everyone does truly matter.
