Is Your Writing Getting Consumed?

Are you publishing in the right place, and is it visible?

As a new writer on this platform, it took a short while to learn the navigational and formatting requirements of the system. However, I found it not all that complicated, and the rules are understandably necessary.

As I inch past the 60-day mark since my first article was published, I am asking myself the question posed in the title. Being a new member my expectations are grounded in the fact that it may take a while to get fully engaged with the readers on this platform.

That brings me to the subtitle question.

The depth of Medium is breathtaking. There are so many publications available. With new ones discovered almost daily, I continually ask myself if this is the right place to publish the next article.

Self-produced photographic images serve as the foundation of my writing. It is a good source as they all have a story to be told.

Photography is admittedly a relatively small niche on this platform. However, it serves as the most suitable vehicle for me when adhering to the “find your niche” advice frequently encountered.

Several others on this platform utilize photography as the source for their writing, so I have company. This is not a singular mission. So far, so good.

Sixty days into publishing on Medium my perception is that consumption of your articles is relative to visibility times frequency. It’s a sort of mathematical perspective of how easily your stories can become invisible.

Visibility starts by utilizing the correct publication for your submittals and is further impacted by how often you submit material to the publication.

There are outstanding full-time writers on Medium that we as new writers compete against. The competition is good. It forces you to evaluate the quality of your work and how much you want to do it.

And yes, quality is imperative.

That brings me to the next mathematical perspective. Quality minus frequency equals less visibility. Decent writing without a lot of frequency isn’t going to do much for the visibility factor. Do you have the time to produce a high volume of quality material in your day?

The final thought is relative to your purpose for being here. Why are you writing on Medium? How much does it mean that your material is consumed at the same level as the full-time writers on this platform?

New writers, like me, are more often than not seeking acknowledgment of their writing skills. This platform appears to be a very suitable vehicle to perform that evaluation.

Time will be the test.

“Is your writing getting consumed?”

And yes, the photograph at the top did inspire this article, so I guess I have remained true to my mission of connecting words with images.
