Is Word Count Important?
Word Counts
If we are talking about say, a college application essay. You would want to come in as close to the specified word count limit without going over too much. Over too much and an online form might cut some out or the over amount just might not be read.
Blog Articles
Now if we’re talking about blogs, I’ve come to see two schools of thought. The first comes from Google’s John Mueller who states that word count is NOT a ranking factor. The strategy then being to wrap it up when you no longer have anything else that is relevant to say. And to not have a preset number in mind when you are getting started. The other school says that over 1500 or more words is what it would take to hit Google’s page one search results page.
Neil Patel estimates between 1100 and 2700 depending on your industry. But Backlinko went the actual analysis route and surveyed 11.8 million search results and found that the average word count to reach Google’s page one search results is 1447 words.
Conclusion
If there is anything that can be learned from this it’s that word count is indeed important if you want to rank your blog articles.
