Is Watchmen A Better Murder Mystery Than Knives Out?

Is Knives Out even a murder mystery?

Watchmen (Warner Bros), Knives Out (T-Street/Lionsgate), Batman v Superman (Warner Bros)

Zack Snyder should embrace the kind of stories he’s great at telling

I wish it wasn’t such an easy case, but Chris Evans can’t own every franchise under the sun.

The real twist of Knives Out is that it isn’t actually a murder mystery. The victim took his own life. The likely killer is an innocent woman. The real criminals are the ones who tried to make it look like a crime happened in the first place.

Whodunit? Whydunit? The essential questions to a murder mystery are conspicuously absent.

Is Watchmen even a superhero movie?

Flip the twist and you’ve got Watchmen. That’s a movie that seems like it might be about superheroes, but that big reveal at the end… Holy Ozymandias!

Zack Snyder made a murder mystery where the identity of the murderer solves a mystery that unveils a darker truth.

Whodunit? Whydunit?

Batman v Superman (Warner Bros)

In the game of Watchmen v Knives Out, superheroes fooled us into watching a murder mystery as much as a whodunit fooled us into watching a mystery comedy.

And once you see how that murder mystery empowered Zack Snyder to impossibly make a better whodunit than Rian Johnson, you’ll also see how a legitimate murder mystery would have transformed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice from impossibly awful into Snyder’s masterpiece.

Because I think given Snyder’s tastes, he’s the only one that could turn the Red Hood into the detective we need.
