Is Time Off From Work Actually Good For You?

My first thought was yes…

It sounds silly to ask the question, however, is time off work actually good for you? I am sure 90% of people would say yes, but I’m not so sure.

I am just about to finish my week off from work and have enjoyed every last moment of it. I have spent time with the most important people in my life, which of course is my family.

I learn about my children every day and they bring me so much joy, my wife and I have a good relationship, however on my week off with her it has been tested at times. This I am sure is familiar with many of you reading.

During my week off I have spent an incredible amount of money, with a big purchase for my wife as it was her birthday, I bought her a brand new Ssangyong.

If I had been working, then not only would I have saved the money that I have spent this week, but also would have earned extra money on top of my basic wage.

My relationship may also have benefitted with my wife as we get excited to see each other at the end of a hard day, there is so much conversation to be had rather than the question, “what shall we eat for tea tonight?”

I know my work also helps with my brainpower and gives me a sense of achievement and satisfaction, I am probably one of a small percentage of people who actually enjoy their everyday job.

If I won the lotto would I quit work? I am not so sure, I need something to keep me busy, it also means when I do have time off I enjoy it far more.

My mother, God rest her soul, I saw deteriorate when she retired from working, she reacted slower to the conversation, started to lose her memory and had less drive and conviction with the day to day things she did.

I know what you are going to say, she is retired, that happens, however physically she also changed very quickly, I ended up buying her brain teasers and puzzles to try and help, it was frightening to see happen almost overnight.

I think my conclusion to my own question is having work, life balance. It is something I don’t have, working around 55–60 hours a week, due to how busy we are as a company.

My intention each day is to leave work around 5 pm, in reality, I normally leave around 7 pm — 8 pm each night, when your up at 6 am and leave for work at 07:30 am, it is a very long day.

I love my job, I also love my family, so I will try and have a better work, life balance moving forward, if possible I would encourage you to do the same.
