Summary

The author distinguishes between the soul and the spirit as separate but interconnected components of our existence, essential for personal growth and the pursuit of our hopes and dreams.

Abstract

In the provided content, the author articulates a personal belief that the soul and spirit are distinct entities within the human experience. The soul is described as our ultimate destination or destiny, while the spirit is likened to an internal mechanism that connects us to the universe and empowers us to face challenges. The author introduces 'The Endeavor Perspective,' a framework consisting of four steps: gathering and analyzing data, developing structure and discipline, fostering collaboration, and pursuing transformation through physical effort. This perspective is used to differentiate the spirit, which is associated with heart, attitude, and connection, from the soul, which represents our future self and destiny. The author invites readers to consider the implications of this distinction in the context of a broader existential battle for the souls of humanity and encourages exploration of these concepts for personal development.

Is My Spirit My Soul?

I believe there are four areas of our lives we sharpen to help make our hopes and dreams come true: the soul, the mind, the spirit, and the body. There are those who may use soul and spirit interchangeably, but for me they are distinctly separate.

My approach to subjects of a spiritual nature, comes from the more practical side of the endeavor perspective. The endeavor is something in which I am confident we all practice. To the endeavor, it does not matter when or where you born. Nor does it care about your language, culture, religion, philosophy, psychology, spirituality, or identity.

The rules of the endeavor always remain the same, and they are the underlying foundation of every belief, tool, and strategy we possess. We all endeavor, and it is for this reason we even have language, or developed culture and religion, or explored philosophy and psychology, or even attempted to harness the power of our spirituality and identity. The rules of the endeavor are what make our undertakings successful, and they can enhance anything we have already created.

The rules or process of the endeavor are as follows:

  1. Gather and analyze data to help you determine an end goal or destination.
  2. Develop structure and procedures to remain disciplined in achieving your goal.
  3. Create collaboration through communication and relationship-building.
  4. Pursue transformation through physical effort.

I did my best to sum up this process in my poem, The Essence of Endeavor.

Using this framework that I call The Endeavor Perspective, I was able to determine an answer to my question.

No, I do not believe my spirit is my soul. I believe they are separate yet necessary aspects.

Allow me to clarify. For me, spirit is more closely connected to the heart rather than the soul. We may say of an athlete who gets up after having fallen, that they have a lot of heart, or a lot of spirit.

We say things like, “That’s the spirit!” It speaks of a person’s attitude and demeanor in the face of challenge. It’s about connecting their internal emotions and strength to an outside source that empowers them to rise to the occasion.

I believe that outside source is the soul.

But like the heart, the spirit is an internal mechanism. It is what allows you to connect to the roadways of the universe. Your soul, however, is your ultimate destination on those roadways. Your destiny.

It is with those pictures in mind I feel the spirit is closer to collaboration, communication, and relationship-building. And the soul is closer to the future-self you are striving to become. While the two can be aligned and even equal to each other, they are distinct.

How do you feel about this? Do you believe your spirit is your innate tool for connecting with those of this plane, as well as those of other planes of existence?

And what if your soul is your destiny? How powerful is that? What if there are beings who already knew this, and so began the eternal battle between good and evil, for the souls of humanity. Is that what this battle is? A desire to not just change, but to acquire a person’s destiny?

I hope this has engaged you enough to explore the deeper meanings and mechanism of the soul, the mind, the spirit, and the body, and how you could apply them to your own pursuits, and to your own body of work.
