Is it Really Better to Have a Niche on Medium?
I see a lot of writers on here talking about niches. Niching down, becoming a niche authority, which niche is more profitable, etc.
The idea is that by focusing on a specific interest for a specific audience, you can become an “expert” in that specific field and only publish stories that those specific readers are interested in. Sounds logical.
I agree with this idea for the most part, but I will add a caveat. You can only write so much about a very specific topic without either running out of things to say or boring your readers to death.
I think it’s important to change things up every once in awhile and try out new topics or writing styles. I don’t know about you, but I like to read things besides advice on entrepreneurship, startups and side hustles.
Sure, those are my main areas of focus, but they aren’t my only interests. Because humans aren’t niches, we are multi-faceted beings. We enjoy stories that entertain us just as much as we like to read essays that inform us.
I believe as long as you remain consistent in your voice and personality, you can write about anything and get a positive response from your audience. I’m not saying you should avoid having a niche, but don’t limit yourself to such narrow parameters every day.
If you’re starting a side hustle, share some stories about your personal struggles along the way, give your readers a peek into who you are outside of furniture flipping, copywriting or whatever it is that you do to pay your bills.
People connect with people, not niches.
