Is it Just Me or is Tipping Out of Control?
As a habitual patron of a certain local eatery, I’ve carved out my own little routine.
It’s as rehearsed as a Broadway show, and just as seamless.
I punch in my order on their mobile app, lay out my customizations (easy on the mayo, please!) and set my pickup time.
And then comes the part that always gives me pause: the tip.
I add it, of course, because I’m a creature of habit, and I wouldn’t want to rub anyone the wrong way.
But today, my finger hovered over the screen as I thought, “Wait a minute, why am I tipping prior to getting my food?”
Yes, my friends, I’m old enough to recall the days when tipping was the cherry on top of a delightful dining experience, a symbol of appreciation for an extra friendly waiter or an exceptionally cooked meal.
You know, back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the Earth (just kidding!).
But it seems the game has changed.
Tipping has evolved from a voluntary act of gratitude to what feels like a mandatory tax, levied whether you’re happy or not.
Guilt, rather than satisfaction, often prompts me to tip a certain amount.
Do you feel it too?
The subtle nudge from the POS systems of small businesses, the hint of obligation creeping into the transaction?
It’s like a quiet little voice in your ear whispering, “You’re going to tip, right?”
Am I the only one who finds it a tad unnerving?
And let’s not forget the restaurant owners who’ve enthusiastically embraced this new culture.
In my day (yes, I’m going to say it again!), restaurant owners bore the responsibility of adequately compensating their employees.
Now, it seems, we, the customers, are being asked to shoulder some of that burden.
Is that fair?
Is it right?
But let’s not jump to conclusions.
Perhaps there’s an aspect of this tipping evolution we’re not seeing, an undercurrent we’re not understanding.
Is it possible that this is simply a necessary adaptation to the changing times?
So, readers of all ages, I’m curious.
What’s your take on this new-age tipping culture?
Is it spiraling out of control, or is there a method to this madness we’re simply not seeing?
And also, how many of you have accidentally over-tipped because you didn’t have your glasses on? (Just me? Well, consider it my good deed for the week!)
Feel free to share your thoughts, laughter, and any hilarious tipping mishaps.
