Is it Better to Teach Someone to Fish or Give them a Fish?

What’s the obstruction in this?

Let’s take this from the top

Most of who will read this knows that I’ve been in employment services and seen this firsthand for years. So, let me go ahead and tell you that the infamous phrase above is not relevant.

This is what someone needs to survive:

  • Transportation (bus, car, or walk if applicable)
  • Food for today
  • A job for today so they will not need to be given food tomorrow
  • Skills to survive
  • Appropriate clothing (interview clothes and work clothes)
  • Housing
  • Lastly, and most importantly, mental health: resilience, reasoning, and confidence. Or they will lose it all

Where else have we seen these things?

  • Ah, yes! Average parents do all these things to set their kids to be independent. Even you have had these things. Those who have succeeded with never having had at least one of these things is an outlier and I don’t teach people they are special outliers. Especially if they are to be parents.

What if the person who needs help is an adult?

Easy, find out what of that list needs met and give it to them. Most of the people I’ve worked with have had a really hard life and have given up. They stumble over and over to the point of saying “at least in jail I have a roof over my head and 3 meals a day. Out here I sometimes have a roof over my head and have a place to eat, but about 50% of the time out here I’ve had a roof and maybe 1 good meal a day.”

That truth really pounds the following statement into their soul:

“I’m not good enough to live”

Let me give you all a bit of reality. If someone has all those things on that list, I don’t honesty take your opinion about not needing any one thing on that list. I take it from those whose lives are hurt by it. They want those things and for the life of them have an issue attaining them.

Another issue

  • The US Defense Budget for 2021 is a whopping 768 Billion dollars. A major increase from the last administration IN the years 2017–2019
  • Federal prisons are about $200 million https://www.prisonpolicy.org/reports/money.html
  • Mental Health: $0.00

Walkthrough

Without transportation, my clients had issues with obtaining good-paying jobs. It was just luck if they happen to live close by. If they did not have transportation they probably lived with a family member and that means their housing was not stable.

Without housing, my clients had to leave jobs when they had to live in a more affordable place, such as public housing.

Without food for today, my clients not only felt bad, but that was an indicator that one of the other things on that list was missing.

Without appropriate clothing, some interviewers will not even see you.

With having two or more things missing from the list, there is less likely a skill inside of that person.

Without mental health and strength, my clients landed back in addiction, jail, or homelessness.

We can talk all day about their problems. The only thing that remains after dusk is clear, is this list I have compiled.

I can build my life larger and larger each day because I have all those things. Most people who go on family vacations have all the items on that list. I am on vacation right now and I am proposing to my girlfriend later today. I can make side money on Medium, also, because I don’t have to hunt down transportation, food, temporary jobs, emergency skills, appropriate clothing, housing, and mental health in order to sustain these things.

Many of my clients have to hunt down at least one thing on this list every day. That takes away from saving money sometimes, that takes away from meeting that new manager and getting a better job. Basically, that takes away precious time to build.

How fast can you build a house if you had to hunt for every nail individually?

I can do my job much more efficiently if we had a federal budget of even 1$ of that of the Defense Budget.

I am fighting a losing battle. I have had about a 5% success rate in my field.

I just wanted to talk about this today with you all. Putting some things into perspective.

Kids have:

  • Transportation
  • Food for today
  • A job with the help of parents
  • A good skill baseline to survive
  • Appropriate clothing
  • Housing
  • Lastly, and most importantly, mental health: resilience, reasoning, and confidence

How about you?

  • Transportation
  • Food for today
  • A job
  • A good skill baseline to survive
  • Appropriate clothing
  • Housing
  • Lastly, and most importantly, mental health: resilience, reasoning, and confidence

Why does society think employment support clients don’t need to start like kids? Start from the bottom. Even if we slap on a payment plan to pay 5% of each paycheck to pay for services, at least they would still be ahead. And one day they can ride the bike on their own. Even my clients with IDD (Intellectual & Developmental Disability), or as I say “living with some limitation, have done much better when they lived with the family after they have had services that gave them some items on this list.
