Is Happiness A Result Or A Byproduct Of A Lifelong Journey?

You might be looking for happiness in the wrong place.

Happiness is not a result; it is a byproduct of the journey of knowing yourself. It does not depend on external conditions, and it comes from inside. Until you shine like a sun, you must first find it outside. Thus, it first comes from outside without sustainable results, then one day, it becomes a process from inside out.

The path to happiness is the same path to wisdom. It briefly follows the steps of knowing, doing, and being, and being means doing something as easy as breathing without any extra effort. It is the journey that rewards you with happiness, not the destination. Every target is a moving target that is replaced by a new target.

Learning to be pleased whatever you have in hand, both good and bad, is the key to happiness. I know what you are saying. It is easy to be happy when good things come and find you. I can hear you asking how it is possible to be happy when bad things happen in your life.

First of all, understand that the separation of good and bad is just an illusion. Everything is ONE and is a part of the ALL in the universe. Everything is an integral part of the whole and is inter-connected. Therefore, whatever that happens serves for a higher purpose for your good, that is your spiritual evolution. The physical world is just a theater for your spirit to incarnate and identify with a role. The theater, set-up, theme, characters, and your role are just a mirror for you to learn from. You have chosen this set-up before your birth. Whatever you chose serves for your good beyond your worldly understanding.

Choosing a play before birth does not mean having any free will. You have free will to decide how things will happen and how you embrace them. The list of experiences you have chosen to learn in the school of life will come no matter what you do, but you can choose how you live them.

The first step to happiness is awareness of the self, the people, and the world. Meta-awareness is to know the wisdom explained in the previous two paragraphs. Self-awareness is to follow the ancient guidance — know yourself. Once you start knowing yourself, your expanding awareness will help understand others better and connect with them.

Then the journey continues from knowing to doing. To achieve that, one must establish the freedom of mind, which is different from freedom of thought. It is the mother of all freedoms. Freedom of mind is about breaking free from all illusions, attachments, and obsessions. Unless you leave your comfort zones, you will never ever have a chance to live a nonattached life freely and bravely.

Don`t think I’m talking about a life of isolation. I am talking about freeing yourself mentally from any attachment to the material world and breaking free from illusions and dogma. That means searching for nirvana in a metropolitan life instead of living a life of detachment and isolation on top of a mountain.

Freedom of mind is not attachment or detachment, but non-attachment. You do not own anything in this world where you cannot even reign your breath. If you don`t breathe for 10 minutes, it is the end of your life. What do you think you can control in life? Everything that you think you own is gone when you die. Let go of the ambition to control. Plan less and live more.

In short, happiness is in the journey but not reaching the destination. The journey is just a dualistic game you have chosen to play. Unless you rise above the polarity of life, which works like a pendulum swinging both ways, you cannot establish happiness. Freedom of mind will help your mind rise above the pendulum of life and master the art of non-attachment while living in the jungle of polarity.

So, here is what you have to do to acquire freedom of mind.

  • Leave your comfort zones
  • travel more
  • do things differently
  • learn different things
  • meet different people
  • try more worry less
  • let mistakes happen and learning from them
  • plan less and live more
  • let go for life to unfold its beauties
  • develop a witness mindset that is nothing but a silent, non-judgemental, all-embracing, welcoming observer.

You have all the recipes to be happy in life. Just remove inner veils inside you that keep you away from unleashing your essence.

Cheers,

Kenan
