Is Content Creating Just One Big Ponzi Scheme?
I am confused
Lately, I have been thinking about content creation.
I am increasingly coming across several influencers, marketing- ”experts”, and writers.
They all seem to have figured out the way to the perfect life.
Even better: they are so philanthropic to explain to you in only a few minutes, how you can become rich and successful too.
Where is the “content”?
I started following some of these content creators, influencers and entrepreneurs for a while to see what kind of content they produce.
What usually happens is the following:
- I follow
- A LOT of content immediately floods my social media
- I look at the content for a maximum of 3 days
- It is always the same bullshit line
- I get bored and unfollow
Do you know why? Because there is effectively no content.
The content is, that they “show you how to become a content creator”, or “how to write the best articles to earn 5 figures monthly”, or to “tell you how to make money online with no effort”.
I tell you how to make money online — by creating a bunch of videos telling others how to content create, and monetizing them.
This tip was for free — you are welcome.
Don’t call yourself a content creator
If your only pitch is to talk about how you finally became a successful content creator, without putting out any other content — that’s a scam.
If there is no content except you blasting out “I adopted these 5 strategies to become a successful content creator”, or “This is how I started earning money from Medium articles” — then you are not a content creator! You are effectively taking time and money out of other people’s pockets, promising them the world, when in fact the only content they will ever read is your money-generating machine of “get rich quick” articles and videos.
Let us start creating value, not content
I truly believe, the internet is a phenomenal place and allows us to exchange ideas and intelligence at a scale that nobody ever thought possible.
Unfortunately, it also allows for distributing bullshit at the same scale, as well as gives people access to become short-video-watcher addicts and massive consumers of bullshit marketing theories in the desperate thinking of becoming millionaires.
Yes, it is possible to become wealthy — even a millionaire, with an internet-based business.
Yet, to earn money at that scale, you need to create value for others. You need to put a significant investment towards it (i.e., time), and you need to stay consistent with it.
Instead of just blasting out short, useless and misinformative content, let us put out value instead. Let us create interesting stuff where others can learn something and that provides a refreshing point of view.
