Is China the New Bogeyman?

China and UK go to war. Image Adobe Stock

Have we all become bored with Russia? Has the war dragged on for too long that we can no longer be bothered with its coverage? The shadow of China is lurking. It’s time to refocus our attention on a new unforeseen enemy.

Trump liked to demonize the Chinese. There is a man-made virus out and about and it was China made said, Trump. As every sane person knew, Trump liked to spin his tall tales and sordid lies. He was hardly the barometer of truth.

China is the ultimate dream gateway for businesses in the West. As the old saying goes, “if you can sell a product for a single dollar to every Chinese person, you’ll be a billionaire.” China doesn’t give a fuck about your westernized business. They simply create their own model and make it better.

So many Western enterprises rely on China. From the factories to the docks. When Shanghai port was closed during a recent spell of Covid, the world grinds to a halt. Container ships navigate the East China Sea hoping to refuel and reload. In 2022 it was the busiest port in the world with Shanghai classed as the fastest growing economy.

Hating on China makes no business sense.

But we all need demons. Every political party needs a bogeyman, a threat to boost their credentials. What’s a cold war without an enemy?

Rishi Sunak leads the charge against China. Image from Rishi Sunak’s Linkedin post.

Rishi Sunak, soon to be UK’s new Prime Minister, has major hate for all things China. I’m guessing his constituency does not contain many Chinese people. He’s not the only one. The West is filled with China horror stories. One gets the impression that China is destroying the world and abusing everybody in its path.

The latest news concerned Tiktok. Another scare for the parents of a new generation. “According to a Buzzfeed report from mid-June, China-based employees of ByteDance have repeatedly accessed non-public data about US TikTok users.” (Source: Theconversation.com)

The great army of China gobbling up data to harm the unknowing public. Data is a quantifiable and tangible asset that no lay person can comprehend its full impact if stolen. The public is repeatedly told to protect their data from nefarious organizations. I personally feel we are way past that point. We can’t stop using Google. We are all intertwined and integrated into the great cloud in the sky. Google in the cloud is the modern man’s god.

Sunak is worried though. He wants to protect the British Isles from Chinese invasion. Not physical invasion, more cyber and ethereal. More the IDEA of China. Sunak has vowed he will “face down China.”

“China and the Chinese Communist Party represent the largest threat to Britain and the world’s security and prosperity this century.” Rishi Sunak

I find his post on Linkedin an incredible piece of propaganda and worry about the UK moving further and further to the Right. Pretending you’re not part of Europe and shipping refugees off to Africa was merely the prelude. Here is an elite, educated, one percenter attacking China and normalizing the language.

Sunak wants to shut down all 30 of China’s Confucius Institutes in the UK. He claims teaching Mandarin in schools is a soft promotion of China. Can the same rules apply to any other culture? What of all the Jewish schools teaching Hebrew? Is the idea of Judaism as dangerous a breeding ground as Confucius? What of Islam and the Mosque educational programs? Where exactly do you draw a line?

He will build a new international alliance of free nations to tackle Chinese cyber-threats and share best practices in technology security. One man’s cyber threat is another man’s Google. An alliance of free nations sounds suspiciously like an Orwellian declaration to me. Is anyone else concerned about the language used by Sunak? An alliance of Western countries or whoever is footing the bill, possibly the Saudis.

He will expand MI5’s reach to provide greater support to British businesses and universities to counter Chinese industrial espionage. In times of threat, increasing powers to a secret service is ALWAYS a good idea, right? More power to the government is exactly what voters should be doing.

And the final promise? The need to prevent Chinese acquisitions of key British assets including strategically sensitive tech firms. A free market isn’t free if the Chinese are buying all the resources of future tech. That shit needs to be in the control of the UK’s allies. Germans. Russian oligarchs. Saudi Princes. You know, the type that has been educated by the well-established public school systems of Eton. You can trust an old Etonian to tell you the truth and always have your back, right Boris?

Russia and China together. The dynamic duo brewing up a storm to rival the dollar. They both know they don’t need the West. Both remain insular kingdoms and powerhouse economies. Well, at least one still is after the other went to war.

Throughout the past few centuries of colonialism, industrialization, modernization, and globalization, the world has witnessed the rise of “Western” powers. Now, Asia (and China in particular) has become a very successful and powerful economy, and the West is gradually facing a decline.

With the Russians finally in the doghouse and sneered upon by the entire world, it's time to double down on the Chinese rhetoric. Does Sunak believe the citizens of the UK can separate the country from the people? Hasn’t Russia shown us how easy it is to normalize hate speech against anyone and everything Russian? Where’s the separation? Is it time to boycott China Town, Chinese takeaways, and Buddhism? When you choose to attack a government and its policies, you are also attacking its people. This rhetoric fuels xenophobia.

Asian hate crimes and anti-Asian sentiments are high and rising. The UK is full of racists led by the top down. It is nothing less than blatant hypocrisy to claim to fight racism and foster an inclusive and multi-cultural Britain whilst positioning the entirety of China as a threat.

There is a climate and humanitarian crisis in the world today. Existential threats are everywhere. Do we need another bogeyman? Conflict and division drive UK politics. Us vs Them. UK vs Europe. UK vs Russia. UK vs China. It is a dangerous path that will lead to a totalitarian government that has an increasing thirst for power.

Sunak is not the man to bring harmony to the embattled nation. How could he be when China is lurking at his door.
