Is Anybody Actually Voting “for” Joe Biden?
Lots of votes against Trump, but not so many “for” Biden.

Joe Biden has a problem. His problem, like Hillary Clinton, is likability. The Democratic party learned nothing by Hillary Clinton’s 2016 defeat. He is not a popular presidential choice and it could easily cost him the election.
With the election right around the corner, this is when the hype machines should be cranking into overdrive. The Trump election train never really stopped moving. He has spent much of his presidency travelling around and holding rallies in preparation for the 2020 elections.
Due to the Coronavirus, most rallies have been placed on hold. Trump held a rally in Tulsa in June during the peak of the virus but has not held once since. He even altered the Republican National Convention that was planned to be held in Jacksonville Florida.
With such great risks to the voter base, it is of little surprise that the rallies have been stymied and that the Democratic National Convention took place as an online affair as opposed to the usual gathering. It is unusual circumstances for an election year. This makes it incredibly difficult to truly know who is actually leading and how much hype there is for each candidate.
So little faith
Trump is known to have a rather fervent base of voters, but can the same be said for Joe Biden? According to a Pew Research poll, 56% of registered voters who support Biden say it is because he is not Donald Trump. The numbers of voting as the opposition were only 33% in the 2016 election.
There is little question that Trump is a magnet for controversy. He has a habit of lying to journalists along with the public openly and will constantly call any sort of bad press “fake news”. His ability to get into squabbles over minor issues on Twitter is also second to none. Even many people who voted for him have taken issue with his constant Tweeting.
Swing voters are more likely to look at what he has actually accomplished in his time in office. Even in this realm, it can be a fight to determine what is correct and what isn’t. A vast majority of his accomplishments in office have been rollbacks of Obama era rules, specifically on environmental protections. Rather than try to build his own legacy he has spent a presidency tearing down a legacy.
Then there were many thousands of people removed from the voter rolls. For fans of Trump, this will be praised as helping to prevent illegal voting in elections. For those who oppose Trump, this is an obvious sign of him helping Republicans steal elections. With him, in charge, nothing is as easy as it may seem.
With Trump being as polarizing of a figure as he is a more popular figure would likely have made a stronger candidate. Despite what the polls might be saying always remember that the Democratic party thought Hillary was winning in 2016 until she didn’t.
Biden is like Trump on race
Joe Biden’s own history in politics is full of follies and foibles since the beginning. He has been called a “gaffe machine” by a number of journalist publications over the years. It is expected to have a number of missteps along the way as a politician and professional speaker, which oftentimes they are overlooked.
Trump himself is something of a gaffe machine. With Trump, it can be difficult to tell if it is simply a misspeak or if it was intentional at times. Wagering that most of it are intentional seems like the smart bet.
The issue of racism is one of the most prominent topics at the moment. Everybody knows that Trump has said a number of things that border on blatant racism if not outright xenophobia. Some of the groups who have supported Trump since the beginning certainly have roots in racism. Although he has not openly supported them he certainly has not disavowed them either.
Biden, however, does not have a squeaky clean record when it comes to race. There was the issue of him opposing “busing” in the late ’70s. This was the policy of busing children from either white or black schools into other schools to integrate them together. He has claimed that his reason for opposing it was simply that it was government overreach.
He was attacked for this during the Democratic primaries by none other than his VP Kamala Harris. Choosing her as the Vice President was likely an olive branch as well as political pandering in hopes of securing some votes he would not get otherwise.
He has also made some comments disparaging towards the black communities and individuals recently. His comments of “Well I tell you what, If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black” and his thoughts on black diversity have certainly not helped him. While these may just be political gaffes it does begin to form a pattern of racial attitudes that are not acceptable.
Sexual Misconduct
Trump has a long history of sexual misconduct. In the 90’s Trump’s first marriage imploded very publicly due to him having a mistress on the side. The next marriage fell apart due to him having multiple mistresses while being married. His current marriage to Melania has held steady, although he most certainly has not been faithful. Stormy Daniels comes to mind.
There are also many other allegations of him bursting into dressing rooms during the Miss Teen USA beauty pageant to ogle young ladies. Trump was the owner of the Miss USA pageant for many years. He sold the organization in 2015.
Lastly, there was a rape allegation and many sexual misconduct allegations. None of these claims has ever been proven to be true, but with his history of other misdeeds, it certainly is not out of character for the man.
Biden himself has also had sexual assault allegations levelled his way. Tara Reade was a staffer of his in the ’90s who claimed he assaulted her. Although like Trump, the allegations haven’t gone anywhere it is another mark on Biden’s bid for the presidency.
Biden is also the only presidential candidate in my lifetime who has a pattern of touching young girls and women or smelling their hair publicly. His actual supporters will write this off as him just being a “little handsy” or “affectionate”. This is a double standard. With the democrats being all-out supporters of the hashtag “believe all women movement” it is hypocrisy at it’s finest.
All of these constant issues have not been good for Biden’s image. I recall when Obama was president and Joe was the VP many of my friends referred to him as “Uncle Joe”. It’s a kindly nickname that harkens to that cool uncle that stops by and brings presents for the kids. Now that he is actually running for president those same friends have openly stated that he is a problematic candidate, but he’s a better option than Trump.
Are either of them good for the country
According to those same Pew polls, only 8% of registered voters agreed with the statement “it is difficult to choose between Donald Trump and Joe Biden because either one would make a good president”. In the reverse only 21% agree that the choice would be difficult “because neither one would make a good president.” These numbers are absurdly low for a presidential election.
Incumbent presidents have always had a boost simply because they are the one currently in office. For Biden to win he is going to have to get more people out to vote than in 2016 and hope that some swing voters actually hate Trump enough to go to the polls.
If Biden wins then it likely becomes business as usual. Much of that could depend on whether or not the Democrats take the house and senate. With full control, they “might” try to pass some form of medicare expansion, although it is possible it ends up as it did for Obama.
The democratic party and the republicans often talk a different game, but both are responsible for stagnant wages, lack of healthcare funding, and a student debt system that is about to go bust.
Biden has been in some form of office since 1973. He is as much a part of a bloated dysfunctional system as Mitch Mcconnell or Nancy Pelosi. Win or lose I wouldn’t expect a massive shock to the system overnight. For real “hope and change” it will take decades.
Some inroads have been made into changing the party over the past couple of elections. With wins by actual far-left progressives in the recent elections they are starting to make inroads. In a couple of decades, they may be the power of the party and the current political lifers will be out.
