Updated January 28, 2022

Hi there! My name is Susie Pinon, the creator, and editor of The Orange Journal, and I have been writing on Medium since January of 2020. I came across the platform during a dinner meet-up chat with an old college friend the same month I completed undergrad (December 2019).

At the time, I was mentally struggling over which career path to pursue, though I already knew my passion was to write. As it turned out, Medium triggered the beginning of my journey towards becoming a writer — like for a living!

In the first year of Covid when the whole world was stuck home, I decided to write, and continue to write, and fell head over heels in love with the art of words.

“This was it!” I had thought in disbelief. “I found my passion!”

Since then, I exposed myself to topics I had never heard of, honed in on my skillset, and effectively broadened my vocabulary as I intently studied Medium gurus for many months.

After two years, I was able to confidently curate a 15-min read Medium FAQ that I guarantee will teach you something new, even if you are not new.

I became reunited with humanity through the ingenuity of creators across the globe. I couldn’t stop reading, and absorbing the perspectives and life experiences that others brought to the “Medium table.”

The Birth of TOJ

Within six months on the platform, The Orange Journal was born in my mind’s eye. I was prepared to start something I’d be proud to call mine, support other writers, and make the world a better place through words — just like all the writers before me have. It took me all of five minutes to come up with the name as I nuzzled my feet in the grass.

I knew that once I made this choice, it was there on the internet eternally, with no chance of “erasing it.” I glanced at my beloved orange journal that sits beside me on most mornings, and it clicked. This book knew more about me than anyone in the world.

There was pain and sorrow across tear-stained pages. There were joyous realizations and combinations of my development that led me closer to a self-actualized self with each day that passed. And so The Orange Journal was born.

Evolution of The Orange Journal

As TOJ progressed and matured, writers started asking me to join. Did they want to write for my publication? What am I special or something? I couldn’t believe it!

I became very fond of writers like Uwem Daniels, Rex Shadeseagle, Jeanne Marron, Inès Le Cannellier, Andrea Decker, and so many more. I didn’t realize that I would be able to connect with others in this way, with people I have never met in real life and very well may never meet.

I became reunited with humanity through the ingenuity of creators across the globe.

Many writers provided me with a very well-needed reality check. Writers like Thee JayDoubleyew provided me with insight that helped me to “check myself” and my subconscious biases I literally wasn’t aware of.

I couldn’t believe how much I was gaining. I continue to learn from my writers on a daily basis.

I suspect I will need to onboard a new editor soon, though I am not sure how to go about it since it’s “my baby.”🍊

Updates to come on that…

My Real Journal Inspired This Place

My first journal entry from November 21st, 2019:

“Love is always the answer. Free yourself from the ideals of perfection and just live as your raw, natural self. True beauty lies within you heart. Sometimes, putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes allows us to express gratitude more often. Thank you Universe for letting me see today all the beauty of the Earth!”

I am beyond excited to perpetuate the idea that we are never truly finished growing. I love to learn how to make my inner self and my way of living better, and I look forward to learning from other contributors’ life experiences. I hope you’ll join me in making this world a better place through the lens of this Medium pub.
