Summary

The undefined website introduces "Literary Impulse," a new online literary journal with a Medium publication presence, inviting submissions from poets and writers, particularly for a themed challenge on "Hiraeth."

Abstract

"Literary Impulse" is a burgeoning online literary journal that has recently welcomed a member of the Illumination Writers community to its editorial board. The journal, which has a sophisticated website and a commitment to quality content, is actively seeking contributions from both established and emerging writers who share a passion for excellent writing. While the print-style journal has limited space and a monthly publishing schedule, its Medium publication offers ample space for showcasing talent. The team at Literary Impulse has announced a writing challenge for September centered around the theme of "Hiraeth," a Welsh term evoking a deep sense of nostalgia and longing. Submissions for this theme will be accepted from August 10th to September 10th, with the best entries being featured in the journal's next issue.

Opinions

  • The editorial board values the quality of writing over a writer's publication history or background.
  • The journal's aesthetic is reminiscent of an elegant print publication, with a corresponding publishing schedule.
  • The Medium presence of Literary Impulse is seen as a valuable platform for discovering and featuring new talent.
  • The theme "Hiraeth" is chosen for its evocative and nostalgic connotations, aiming to inspire a diverse range of poetic and prose submissions.
  • The challenge is an invitation to writers to explore complex emotions and cultural concepts through their writing.

Last month I accepted an invitation to join the editorial board of Literary Impulse, a dynamic online literary journal. To my delight, I also found quite a few of my Illumination peeps already writing there.

The magazine is only about six months old; however, the journal’s website https://www.literaryimpulse.com/ is truly impressive and so is the quality of its offerings.

What we are looking for

Literary Impulse is specifically looking for accomplished poets and writers, people who are as passionate about good writing as we are. What we don’t care about is your age, bio, or publication history. We judge the work on its own merits and we love to introduce new talent to our readers!

Our online journal is styled to look much like an elegant print publication. It is run along the same lines, and has a publishing schedule to match. This means that each monthly issue has limited pages to fill.

Fortunately, space is not an issue in Literary Impulse’s Medium presence:

Find guidelines and submit here:

On Medium, we hope to find many more talented contributors! And the best stories and poems accepted by our Medium publication are selected for the next issue of the journal.

NEW!

Challenge: “HIRAETH”

You may have seen or heard the word “hiraeth.” It evokes a feeling akin to homesickness, Sehnsucht, or saudade. It’s a word laden with nostalgia, come to us from the enigmatic Welsh language, which also gave us this beauty: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. I kid you not, that’s the name of a town in Wales that means “Saint Mary’s Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave.” It’s written in full at the entrance to its railway station!

Our team at Literary Impulse has chosen hiraeth (and luckily not Llanfairpwllgwyngyll…) as the theme for the September issue, and we are inviting your submissions in the form of poetry or prose (fiction or nonfiction).

Submissions on the Hiraeth theme will be accepted from August 10th through September 10th.

You will find all you need to know about the challenge here:

We hope to read you soon!
