Introduction to Japonica — the Publication of Japanese Culture

Welcome to Japonica, the Medium publication for everything Japan: culture, language, travel, and anything else interesting.

The publication was founded by Yuko Tamura and DC Palter who met on the ILLUMINATION slack channel. We were both writing about Japanese culture on Illumination and began communicating with each other.

We both wished there was a Medium publication focused specifically on Japan. Since there wasn’t, we decided to start one. All of our planning for the publication was done in chats on the Illumination slack. Thanks Dr Mehmet Yildiz!

The publication accepts articles in English or Japanese. Since we started at the beginning of January, we’ve published 50 stories by 18 different writers and garnered 14,000 views.

If you’re Japanese or lived in Japan, we hope you’ll write for us. We take an active role editing stories to help new writers, especially if they need assistance with English.

Even if you’re not ready to write for us, we hope you’ll follow the publication and read our articles. We especially would like to request that you follow our writers. Many are new to Medium and need to reach the 100 followers milestone to be eligible for payments.
