Introduction To Helping Grandparents

In 2018 I found myself responsible for raising a toddler, my grandchild. I had just finished raising my five children and was supposed to be in the throws of being an empty nester.

Starting all over presents a lot of challenges. You know a lot from raising your children, but a refresher course would have been in order. When I began the search for resources, I realized that there weren’t a lot of resources available. I found it shocking that so many grandparents are in placed in the position of advocating on behalf of their grandchildren, why weren’t there more resources?

It was then that I decided that grandparents needed help. We needed to align and help each other so that we could, in turn, experience some of the freedoms we should be having at this stage in our lives.

My publication Helping Grandparents is a place for Medium writers to share their experiences with all that advocating for grandchildren entails. Maybe you have had to fight for your grandparental rights? Perhaps you don’t get to see your grandchildren as often as you would like? Perhaps you are offering childcare. Whatever the case may be, only grandparents know what it is like to be a grandparent, and how much we adore our grandchildren.

I created an information/resource website www.helpinggrandparents.com solely to help grandparents advocate for themselves and their grandchildren. We offer a virtual support group as well as all the resources you will need for guardianship, adoption, and grandparent rights.

I hope that grandparents will share their personal stories, so other grandparents know that they are not alone.
