Greetings from the road less traveled

Hello, I’m John Cunningham. It took me a long time to be comfortable saying that. I used to just think of my name being a formal label that others could use to identify me.

Nowadays, I consider it a description of who I am and what I am about. While I express this every day in my work as a corporate trainer and executive coach. Medium has given me a new space to present the me that lies below the surface.

I am from the Silicon Valley and now reside in Tokyo. I have worked for startups and leveraged my hobby of podcasting into a position as a marketing manager. The work that has been the most fulfilling, so far, has been helping non-native English speakers to be better communicators. I am not sure how much I helped with their English skills, but I know that my clients have become better communicators at work and home through the countless hours they invested in working with me.

I came to Medium through the advice of my executive coach, JB Glossinger, who is the de facto champion of the morning. He has produced nearly 10,000 episodes of his podcast, Morning Coach, and counting. From day 1, he asked me, “If I saw you on Oprah and wanted to find out more about you, where would I go?”

Since I did not have a platform at the time and always considered writing an opportunity I had yet to explore, I ended up here. I started writing in January 2020 and it has been a serendipitous experience. I am so grateful to the team at ILLUMINATION and Dr. Yildiz for inviting me to write in their community. It is such a positive and friendly place. Something we all need more of in our lives.

I write about topics that come up in communication. Many of these topics are universal truths and seem to reoccur as I do my work and chat with friends. Others I base on skills developed over a lifetime. Sometimes I will get a bolt of inspiration from The Creator and write what he is revealing to me. At the end of the day, I hope that my writing inspires you to think more, do more and achieve more than you would have alone.
