Introducing Greg Lawlor

How to introduce myself. Well, this is different. Normally, I would ask about you.

First, thanks to Dr Mehmetyildiz for the opportunity to contribute and learn from the fine network at Illumination.

Here goes: A family man, leader and passionate advocate for active living with a lifetime of experience in communication and business. Dad, Husband, Son, Brother, Uncle, Nephew, Cousin, Teacher, Coach, Businessperson & Entrepreneur, Creative thinker, Problem Solver, Athlete, Student and Writer for Illumination!

As you can see, I turned my ADD into something positive! (sense of humor alert!).

My love of physical activity started very young. Moving made me a better person and thinker. It gave me more energy and increased my patience. I am not sure I can blame regular movement on my sense of humor, but I am sure it did not hurt.

My first passion growing up was to play professional hockey. Fortunately, the end of that dream opened a door to being a fitness and exercise teacher and coach. I turned my interest physical activity into a B.Ed. And M.A. from McGill University in Montreal. (Ironically, the decision going into university was either commerce/business or Physical Education/Exercise Science. I went with PE!)

Getting On The Ice Brings Me Back to My Youth!

That led me to teaching for 8 years and sports administration for 2. It then led me to 25 years (and counting) in the exercise business. Fitness equipment is the realm where I learned sales, had an outlet for my teaching skills, and allowed me to see the world, meet and learn from some of the top minds in the fitness business and exercise science.

Sales opened the door to management, and management to entrepreneurship and over the years developed a world of experience in business administration, marketing, human resources, inventory control,

transportation and logistics and finance.

Sales, combined with teaching also led me to presenting in multiple situations and writing. From proposals to marketing.

Writing became a valuable tool in improving overall communication skills, in solving problems for the people I served in business and in coaching.

It also became a ritual I really enjoyed. It is therapeutic for me and a link between all my worlds.

Customers and colleagues saw value in what I was doing, and that built my confidence enough to put my writing out there. I started with blogs and it has progressed from there.

My differentiating trait is my perspective. In working in various roles, from lesson planning to selling and acquiring businesses, the skillset and perspective is varied. I have an ability to analyze without being paralyzed. I focus on looking at situations through the perspective of others. I can thank my Mom and Dad for that!

My passion has remained in fitness, physical activity and athletic performance, as well as the business of equipment, the creation of Athleticover40.com, and youth coaching.

Writing and communication links them all. My observations cross a lot of boundaries, and I am energized by the opportunities for more exploration.
