Interview Questions That You May Hear

Preparing for a Job Interview

Cover/Logo is designed by me by using Canva Pro

Preparing for an interview can be nerve-wracking especially if this is your first interview.

As someone who has done many in the past and who helps friends prepare, I feel that I should share my knowledge and experiences with you too.

There is a lot to cover and I will make a series of this. So every time I encounter/think of something new I will share them with you. My hope is that you can make use of my experiences/knowledge and as well as my friends’, so you can set yourself up for success.

With this in mind, let’s get started!

What types of questions should you expect?

Interviewers screen for several factors:

  • Skills & Qualifications
  • Industry Knowledge
  • Character/Behaviour

They would go over the skills that you have in your résume and as well as on the job posting to make sure that you are the right fit for them.

How they ask these questions is usually along the lines of:

E.g.

  • Time management and meeting deadlines: can you give me an example of when you have to manage multiple tasks and meet strict deadlines?
  • Financial literacy: How comfortable are you with numbers? Can you give me an example of when you have to allocate funding to several projects without exceeding the budget?
  • Expertise: Can you give me an example of when you have to [insert skill in question] use this in your past experiences?

The following are examples of what you may expect. This is not an exhaustive list but I will share the common questions that I have encountered so you can prepare for them too (please also note that I will also make a separate article for each question since I believe that there is a lot to cover):

E.g.

  • Tell me about yourself and your experiences
  • What do you know about us?
  • Why do you want to be a part of this team?
  • Where do you see yourself in the future?
  • Why should we hire you?
  • What do you hope to gain from us?
  • How and what can you contribute to our team?
  • What is your salary expectation?
  • Can you tell us how much you were paid in your last job?
  • Tell me about your strengths and weaknesses
  • Tell me about the time you made a mistake and how you resolved it
  • Give me your success story
  • How would your friends describe you?
  • How would your colleagues describe you?
  • How would your mentors or bosses describe you?
  • Tell me about the time when you have encountered a stressful situation and how you handled it
  • Are you comfortable with technology? If so, give me examples of the tech you use
  • What are your interests outside of work?
  • How do you maintain a work-life balance?
  • Why did you leave your past jobs?
  • Why are you looking for a new position?
  • Why are you changing careers?
  • Tell me about the time when you had to take risks and how you felt about it each time
  • Are you a team player? If so, give me an example of when you have to step up
  • What kind of working environment do you thrive in?
  • Do you have any questions for us?

These are the common questions that you may hear from an interviewer. My suggestion as well is to go look at the job posting and put together examples for each one.

E.g.

Job posting:

  • Looking for someone who has 2–4 years in [insert position]: have an example of how your past experiences relate to this position
  • Proven [insert skill]: have examples of when you have utilized the said skill that they are looking for
  • Proven ability to build a strong rapport with the clients/customers: This is a KYC — Know Your Customer/Client question. So, give examples of when you took the time to discover more about your clients/customers’ needs and wants and why you think that is important

Referring to the Job Posting is also one of the best ways to prepare for an interview. It gives you an idea of what they are looking for and how you will be able to put your best foot forward.

A note from me:

Be more confident in yourself and in your abilities.

You got the call or email, didn’t you? You have piqued their interest because something about you fits what they may be looking for.

No one else knows about your story but YOU. You are the storyteller and you are letting others see parts of you.

The point of the interviews is to get to know more about you and how you are a great fit for the job. It is also a chance for you to get to know about them and if they are a GOOD FIT FOR YOU TOO.

Yes, you read that right. It’s not just them interviewing you but you are discovering about them too.

You want to partner with someone who will provide you with the most growth, the experiences you will need for the next part of your life (because let’s be honest here, unexpected things will happen. You may not be with the same company for the rest of your life), and who will best contribute to your life.

A job is not just about money.

A job will take the most hours and energy out of your life. There will be times when it will also demand your free time and family time. Make sure that the job that you will take on will also set you up for success.

You got this and make sure to stay tuned for more.
