Dear Hillary Clinton,
Gerard Mclean here, from Englewood, Ohio, just north of Dayton. This is the seventy-seventh letter of one hundred I am writing you on health care; one for each day between your nomination and your election. The previous letters can be found in your USPS mailbox or online at 100HRC.com.
I moved to Ohio from Minnesota for a job with Huffy Corporation, long since sold off in parts and is now owned by their Chinese creditors. This in itself is a bit of the problem we find ourselves in right now, but that is not the point of this letter.
A few years after having moved my family to Dayton for what I thought was going to be a bright future, Huffy started showing signs of breaking apart. I was offered a VP job with a marketing company back in Minneapolis, so I took it.
There were a few issues that are not my story to tell, but I ended up commuting from Minnesota to Ohio every two weeks, over the weekends, for two years. Have you ever been a guest in your own home, Hillary? I suspect many who have to take jobs far away from their families know that feeling. It isn’t pleasant.
Other than Allisonville Road outside of Indianapolis, the exit that burns most intensively in my memory is the Janesville exit off of I90, just north of Beloit.
I now know why. The only person more dangerous to our social systems than your Republican opponent is the man holding the Speaker’s gavel in the House of Representative, a man who also ironically graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, a state school my taxes supports, a system he now calls “socialism.”
While it is important for SinglePayer, MedicareForAll, UniversalCare that you defeat your Republican rival, it is equally important the gavel changes hands.
