Interconnected

Something made by WE, not ME

Large scale cyanotype on fabric | constructed by author, supplied by community

With borrowed hands by scissor’s snip supplied from keen observers coasting near and far, with loving hope, community inclined, I gathered puzzle pieces’ repertoire. To cotton fabric, dipped in sunshine’s brew, the patient palms were pinned with life’s design. The sprouted growth took on the ocean’s hue, when bathed in UV’s penetrating shine. So many worked together to transform a vision that evolved along the way; what started small whipped up into a storm that made the craft of art feel more like play. In my life’s work I can’t succeed alone; one body, many parts: the cornerstone.

When ScienceDuuude suggested a prompt of “Something I Made” for his new publication, this project was the first thing that came to mind. . . . although I don’t consider it something made only by me, because I couldn’t have done it alone! Last September I was thrilled to have the help of many to put together the cyanotype you see in the photo, in celebration of World Cyanotype Day. The theme was Interconnected, and the rest of it just kinda happened naturally (as the best things do). Anyway so here’s a silly sonnet that (hopefully) celebrates how much we need each other. If you’d like to read more about the project, here’s a link to an article I wrote on it on my website.

PS I love cyanotypes and spend a lot of time promoting the technique (as well as World Cyanotype Day itself), so y’all hit me up if you ever have any questions about making them! Read more about World Cyanotype Day here. . . . .
