Instagram is A Giant 100 Billion Dollar Mess

That is going to die very soon (if it didn’t yet)

Instagram is one of the most popular social media apps in history, but like everything Mark Zuckerberg does, Instagram is also expected to be ruined just like Facebook, and here is why.

I wrote my most popular article in September that got over 6000 views and reads, it was about why Instagram is going to die soon, well, it’s still expected to go, but things changed a bit, it’s now a lot worse than I expected.

Functionality

Firstly, too many functions. This is very similar to Facebook. It was undoubtedly the most popular app in the world, but then it was ruined by too many features like a marketplace, groups, stories, jobs, live streams, Facebook gaming, it was hard to navigate. Just open the app right now, there is so much going on that it is overwhelming to use it.

I think that this was the reason behind the mass migration of youth to Instagram, and I guess we can all agree that Facebook’s demographic is mainly elderly right now.

Okay, now let’s look at Instagram. In recent years or even months, they really started adding as many features as they could. They added new functionality to Instagram direct, now you can also message using Facebook Messenger. They added Reels and a Shop, new features in stories, and so on.

Maybe some of the features are useful, but Instagram turned from a shiny and relatively simple photo-sharing app to the one that tries to be everything at once.

Just look at it, they stole Reels, and now it’s a total mess, it’s basically stories in form of posts, okay Instagram is trying to capture young audience with shorter attention spans. Messenger, here Instagram is trying to be a messaging app, stories that aren’t going anywhere, IGTV- Instagram’s attempt to become next YouTube, traditional posts, and of course, Instagram Shop.

Oh, the Shop...

Instagram Shop

Instagram not only tries to become a messenger, the new TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook but it also suddenly decided to become a marketplace.

Firstly, just moving the activity or “like” button to a completely unfamiliar place made a lot of people angry. Secondly, why would you even add a marketplace to a social media app? It just feels like everyone is desperately trying to earn as much money as possible from their users in any way.

Adding a shop to a place where most of the people click feels very predatory. Consumerism should never become a normal thing in our lives. By adding a shop to Instagram they basically tell people to go buy something. Shopping is not bad, but when you see the button that sells you an infinite amount of products in an app that you use every day is not right. People will be either really angry on Instagram or will start buying things they don’t even need (during the time when most people are trying to save up).

Ads

Ads are what Facebook makes money on, more specifically, on selling their users’ data. I understand that everyone needs to make money, but an ad every two or three posts is too much. It is now really hard to create catching ads for brands and it’s just ruining the user experience.

The Audience

Instagram used to be an app for young people, it was that sweet place to be in, with beautiful photos and a simple design that set trends for all of the internet. But now we see how almost every single teenager is on TikTok that is now more relevant in the modern world. That’s why Instagram made Reels, to attract the young audience to Instagram.

Facebook once did the same thing in 2016, it was pretty successful, they just copied Snapchat stories that attracted people from there. They also did something similar with IGTV, to attract long-form content viewers who watch YouTube (it didn’t go anywhere).

Now they are doing the same thing with Reels, and here is the problem- Instagram has now attracted too many audiences from all over the internet, those who want to chat, those who love stories, those who liked original Instagram, those who watch YouTube, those who watch TikTok videos, and now Facebook audience also migrated to Instagram just because everyone is there.

And what are we looking at here? An app that tried to be liked by everyone. A truly remarkable social media app attracts people because of its never-before-seen features and unique audience- the two traits that Instagram lacks at the moment.

The Algorithm

The one reason why TikTok is winning is the recommendation system it uses to boost content. Instagram doesn’t offer anything as near to TikTok's algorithm, you mostly see the content from accounts you followed (some people like that though), it’s a lot harder to find any new creators on Instagram and the explore page is not as good as TikTok’s For You page.

Content

A lot of content on Instagram is generally not original anymore. People just upload TikToks everywhere, models are what mostly pops up on the explore page, there are a lot of trash ads because Instagram doesn’t offer any form of monetization, and people jump in to become influencers just for the sake of being an influencer.

Conclusion

The word that perfectly describes the downfall of Instagram is oversaturation. It’s just too much. The app is trying to be everything at once and wants to appeal to everyone. I don’t understand why they didn’t learn from the mistake with Facebook because the same thing that happened a few years ago is now called Instagram.

Although I think that Instagram is not going anywhere, just like Snapchat or Facebook, it just too big to die. But it won’t be the best social media app anymore, at least I think so. Instagram proved that you should stick to your original concept and not look at your neighbors' grass because it’s almost always going to be greener. By trying to add all the features possible to attract a lot of new demographics made Instagram forget about creating something original and appreciating the unique audience that they already had.
