Inside Using Substack Newsletter

How you can start using Substack.

Photo by Mr Cup / Fabien Barral on Unsplash

These days it seems that everyone has an account on Substack.

Substack is a writing platform in a form of a newsletter. On Substack you share content you think is valuable for your readers. That could be content you write on online platforms, your thoughts with links to other content, or anything you love to share.

You can use it as a newsletter tool, but also as an expanded writing tool, but then you are collecting readers in a sort of database. This newsletter comes right into your e-mail inbox. That is what I like about this service. You also can earn money with this newsletter service.

I have two accounts: one for my thoughts and one for classical music.

One of the newsletter Thoughts I put my latest Medium and other writing platform stories, or just what is on my mind. The newsletter of classical music is about this genre.

What are the secrets of this great writing tool? I don’t know everything about how to use this. What I will tell you, is what I know.

It is a great platform to expand your writing. I love the simplicity of Substack. It is also good when you don’t want any categories shown in a menu bar above or on the sidebar of the screen/page.

How to make an account on Substack?

Go to the website www.substack.com.

Type in the account name you want to use. When you completed that, in the settings, you can add the payment options. Most Substack users wait before they do this.

What are their functions?

Second choose what you want to do: new article, podcast or a new thread.

Choose ‘New post’ if you want to write a new article.

Choose ‘New episode’ when you want to post a podcast or a spoken text. I haven’t tried that.

Choose ‘New thread’ if you want to start a discussion about a specific topic. You can use this thread for a story or an episode you want to make.

‘New Post’: this is the function when you want to write a new post. I always start with the content, the I ass the title and subtitle. Topics I write about on my Thoughts account are diverse, from recent articles I wrote online, to just new articles with any thoughts I have.

‘New episode’: I haven’t tried this one yet, but planning in the future. You can add a new episode of your podcast on your Substack account.

‘New thread’: this is a great way to ask your readers what they love to see you writing, and what you are posting. Or just collect some opinions to use for your content.

Examples of accounts

I follow a few Substack accounts. As a writer and journalist, I love to read different content and content out of my league as I can learn from it.

Here is some content I like.

There are also other accounts I follow, but I stick — for now — with the writer here on Medium.

What drives me to write content on Substack?

Then there is the question:

What drives me to write on Substack?

In the first place, I did just signed up without knowing what I was doing. On the other hand, I was trying a different kind of newsletter services to find what fits best with me and what I need for standing out my stories, and thoughts.

I like the clean interface of Substack. I like the three options you can choose from a new post, new episode and new thread.
