Insane Study Shows How Your Mind Influences Your Body

This article is about milkshakes. But it is also about the incredible effects that our beliefs can have on our bodies.

So much in advance: It is truly mindblowing.

The Milkshake Study

The study was conducted in 2011 and led by Alia J Crum.

It is titled “Mind over milkshakes: mindsets, not just nutrients, determine ghrelin response”.

The aim of the study was to find out whether the mindset with which one eats food influences satiety. This was measured using grehlin, a metabolic hormone that is responsible, among other things, for regulating the feeling of hunger and satiety.

The 46 participants of the study consumed the same milkshake with a calorific value of 380 kcal on two different dates.

However, on one occasion they were told that it was an indulgent 620 kcal shake. The other time, they were told that it was a light 140 kcal shake.

Analyses of blood samples were then used to determine whether the different beliefs about what they consumed could actually influence grehlin levels.
