Indonesia’s Spatial Dataset from Legitimate Sources
I am currently working in a disaster-related organization that collects pretty much baseline spatial dataset that is going to be processed for multiple projects. I have engaged in multiple areas of study in Southeast Asia and Asia in general, such as Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Most of the time, I stumbled upon barriers to look for relevant data. Even though I admit that geopackage is available, but oftentimes it does not work. Most of the research will require a very specific area up to Level 4 or Level 5 of administrative boundaries. In other instances, the data require various thematic data, which probably not be covered in any geopackage. Not to mention that engaging in developing countries where the geoportal is not yet common. There is also another stumbling block if all of those data are not provided in English.
During my research, I was hoping that someone out there on the internet will compile the spatial dataset to ease a foreign researcher to find what they need, especially spatial data that is produced by the respective ministries or agencies within the government body.
So, here I am. Trying to update whatever I find interesting and perhaps might help whoever read this article. I’ll start by sharing Indonesia’s national geoportal because I am from Indonesia. The article will be constantly updated. The data is basically stored either in geoportal or other geo web services, ArcGIS Server, or GeoServer in general.
Indonesia’s Geoportal / GeoServer
- Geospatial Information Authority (Badan Informasi Geospasial)
Badan Informasi Geospasial is administering for every administrative boundaries in Indonesia. The data include the outer border of Indonesia, border of each provinces and villages. The geoserver can be accessed through this link :

If you’re looking for any kind of geological dataset, visit this website https://geoportal.esdm.go.id/

The website aims to centralize information on the upstream data of Indonesia. It provides service that is used to support the implementation of operational tasks by involving information technology in data management.
3. Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (National Disaster Management Agency)
BNPB is a government agency that is established to build a disaster management system in the country. Every data that is related to disaster can be found in the National Disaster Management Agency.

BNPB has a platform called InaRISK (http://inarisk.bnpb.go.id/) that functions to analyze the risk assessment in Indonesia. The data include hazards, affected population, infrastructure at risk, and other exposed areas based on a risk assessment index. The official website for updated disaster-related news can be accessed in https://www.bnpb.go.id/

4. Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency)
Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi dan Geofisika abbreviated as BMKG is the government agency that engages in everything related to the atmospheric phenomena, including but not limited to meteorology, climate, and to some extent of the earthquake. They also manage the weather forecast, rainfall information, humidity, evaporation, and so on. The tools are installed all across Indonesia. BMKG official website https://www.bmkg.go.id/
