Inclusive Agile: Extending the Reach of the Manifesto

I recently encountered an intriguing audience question at the CTOCraftCon Agile panel talk. It went something like this:

“The original Agile manifesto was written by the least diverse group you can imagine. What could be a new approach that leverages diversity better?”

The question was insightful, with some excellent answers on stage. But it got me thinking: Are we missing an opportunity to embed a D&I focus into the Manifesto?

What is the Agile Manifesto?

The Agile Manifesto outlines Agile software development core values and principles. They guide Agile teams to deliver high-quality software flexibly and responsively.

The twelve principles provide further guidance on practicing the four core values.

Embedding inclusivity into the Manifesto

The Agile Manifesto has revolutionised the way teams approach software development. But, it’s crucial to acknowledge that diversity and inclusion were not at the forefront of discussions when the Manifesto was drafted. Can we add an element to the Manifesto to highlight the need for inclusivity in Agile? To represent diverse perspectives and experiences?

Making the focus explicit

The Manifesto is the first thing people reference when talking about Agile. It feels like a missed opportunity if we don’t make diversity and inclusion a vital part of that discourse. In an inclusive environment, harnessing the power of diverse minds is easy. To this end, I propose an amendment to the Manifesto. Here’s a fifth part of the Manifesto that could be effective:

Embracing and Celebrating Diversity over Homogeneity.

Putting it into practice

With this amendment, Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) become a part of Agile traditions. Organisations can use this to

  • Seek diverse representation in Agile leadership roles.
  • Establish mentorship programs. Help diverse team members receive guidance and support from experienced Agile leaders.
  • Plan for leadership succession with a focus on diversity and inclusion.
  • Provide training and resources on inclusive leadership to Agile leaders.

To make Agile practices more inclusive, use the Manifesto to:

  1. Recognize diversity gaps and the importance of inclusivity.
  2. Embrace diversity in Agile teams.
  3. Use inclusive language and avoid biases in Agile documentation, frameworks, and methodologies.
  4. Address unconscious bias and barriers to diverse participation.
  5. Emphasize the importance of collaborative decision-making processes within Agile teams.
  6. Accommodate cultural, social, and individual differences.
  7. Support individuals from underrepresented groups through mentorship and sponsorship programs.
  8. Ensure inclusivity remains a top priority through continuous improvement and feedback loops.

By embracing diversity, we can value and respect everyone’s contributions. Harness the full potential of diverse perspectives and experiences.

Final Thoughts

Incorporating inclusivity into Agile practices is crucial. Adding it to the Manifesto allows to build a foundational focus. To embrace diversity and enable collaboration and growth for all software development teams.
