In Touch With Nature

Fourth Week of February

If you lose touch with nature you lose touch with humanity. —Jiddu Krishnamurtim

Last week I shared a photo from Sarobia, an estate garden from the early 1900s that has been preserved at my local state park.

From a 1937 Time magazine article:

For U.S. birds, insects, small animals, weeds, poets and artists, there exists no snugger sanctuary than Sarobia.

I have been continuing my daily outdoor time, stopping by Sarobia each day. It is a great opportunity for history and nature-inspired awe. I decided to take a picture each day this week — paying closer attention to things I have seen before and celebrating the restoration work of volunteers.

Day 1

It was raining when I visited today. I was reminded how much smaller things were in the past when my umbrella didn’t fit through the gate of Sarobia. The height is only about six feet. Luckily it was only drizzling so I checked my umbrella at the door.

Day 2

A great surprise! I found a hug from a member of a Facebook group — Random Acts of Crochet Kindness USA!

This cute little guy was tucked in the sundial. There are many sundials on the property. This one just got an upgrade —and a hug!

Day 3

Sarobia has a fairtale theme. See Humpty Dumpty on top of the gate?

Day 4

Two blue days in a row! Too chilly for the huge chessboard that was recently restored by volunteers. I have read that there were costumes and live chess pieces in the early days of the garden!

Day 5

Spades — Alice In Wonderland-themed planters. The historical photos I saw made it hard to see the shape when they were filled with plants. I wonder if the volunteers will plant in them again now that they have been uncovered.

Day 6

The opening quote is from Jiddu Krishnamurtim a frequent visitor of Sarobia. He also said:

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

Current events are an indicator that we need to stay in touch with nature. We need to stay in touch with humanity.

Today was another gray day with another surprise. I am glad others are enjoying nature in this space and sharing love.

Day 7

Today I crossed over to the paths cut through fields of reeds that grow taller than me. I stepped inside, a couple of rows deep, and enjoyed the sound of the wind pushing through — in touch with nature.

Thanks for reading. I hope everyone finds a way to connect with nature and stay in touch with humanity.
