In the Pursuit of Happiness

The biggest obstacle we will ever need to overcome is ourselves.

We, people, are mysterious creatures, seeking happiness our whole life when at the same time we invent hundreds of ways to block our daily enjoyment. We struggle with our feelings but we don’t accept this struggle- We simply demonize our ability to feel, to make mistakes, to be wrong. We live in a society organised to ask people to be miserable while they are planning their ideal life which will bring them that so desirable happiness.

Why are we so harsh on ourselves? We want to succeed in everything, to do everything, to please everyone, to control our actions, emotions and thoughts. To simply be perfect! And we end up far from perfect. Which is normal. But we don’t consider our failure to be perfect as normal. The explanation for our failure is that there is something wrong with us. And while we are seeking to find out what is wrong, we are either harshly judging ourselves for our darkest parts or completely ignoring them. And we end up standing in the exact same place, hurt, discouraged, looking for the same things, in the same place as before.

In the meantime, we enjoy nothing. We convince ourselves we don’t deserve happiness. At least not until we are ready. Not until everything is the way we planned it, how we visualized it. How can we feel joy before our to-do list is done? How can we be complete before we cross off every single goal from our bucket list? How can we be content when we need to face so many problems? Well, life sucks. But we, human beings, suck more.

We don’t need to exhaust ourselves in order to succeed and reach that ideal self or lifestyle. Simply, because it is impossible to control everything. And life will never remind a utopia where everything happens according to our plans. Life will never seem easy. Life will never be a flowery field where cheerful, naked people run around. There will always be surprises, and hardships, and obstacles to overcome. But the biggest obstacle we will ever need to overcome is ourselves. Inner peace and mental health are so important and we keep forgetting them cause everything run so fast and we run behind them like hamsters trapped on a wheel in a box. The difference is we have trapped ourselves in that cage.

In the pursuit of happiness, we lose ourselves. Our goals and our dreams, no matter how important they are to keep us motivated and alive, they can’t be confused with real happiness. They are the vehicle that keeps us on the road. But the friends sitting next to us, the music we play during the trip, the destinations we pass along the way, and those unexpected stops in new places, are the things that eventually shape our personal happiness; that sense of pleasure, gratitude, and fulfilment that is instant, beautiful and unique for each of us.

We need to put the same amount of focus, strength and persistence with which we judge and punish ourselves for our mistakes and our imperfections, into hugging and loving and forgiving our existence and its scars. We need to remind ourselves it’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to not know how to do something. And it’s okay to be tired and vulnerable sometimes. Nothing of the above should define us as broken, stupid, or weak. Taking a break, rearranging our priorities, or changing our path doesn’t make us less.

Well, let’s keep it down for a while. Let’s breathe. Let’s comfort and support ourselves, the same way we would do that for a friend. Let’s admire ourselves for how well we are doing and how far we have already been. Let’s allow us to be present for a while and enjoy the small things. We can observe more. Who we are and what we truly want. What we truly need. What we need right now, Priorities are important. And unfortunately, we cannot prioritize every single thing. Nobody can keep a balance of everything at the same time.

Breathe human!

Follow your heart but not your crazy, fast heartbeat of stress. Feel your body, and let it relax and stretch for a moment. Hear your needs. Allow yourself to get healed, to wait, to finally enjoy. Somewhere between that second of rest, laughter, peace, or joy, did you think you were happy? Did you think for a moment you are satisfied? If you bring close all those dots of moments in time, will this remind you of the happiness you are so badly looking for?

Well, keep going then.

You are almost there human.

We are almost there. Or we might have already been there but we simply need to look more carefully this time.
