In My Eyes

Come back to the sweetness

Life is short. Maybe a little too short.

I don’t think we realize just how fast time goes by. How one minute you’re a small, sinless child playing in the backyard, and the next you’re a programmed adult who has lost the sweetness of life.

Life is short, but it’s still sweet. We just have to come back to that innocent child again to see it.

The sweetness is different in everyone’s eyes, but in my eyes, I see it in the people I surround myself with, the connections I have with others. My sweetness is being the observer. The watcher. Have you ever people-watched? It’s quite incredible when you do it with a loving heart.

I watch the way my dad pours all of his love, hard work, and entire being into a garden that supplies food for our family that he loves so dearly.

I watch my brother stare into the night with his big, brown eyes as we smoke flower and talk about our individual lives with humor and understanding.

I watch my mom cook our family’s favorite meals in a comforting routine that had been clearly passed down by her own mom.

I observe and learn the graceful techniques my sister uses as she puts on her makeup to exalt her natural beauty.

I watch nature, I watch strangers in love, I observe traffic, and how people choose their groceries. I watch everything. It becomes a beautiful way of living to be the watcher. It’s rewarding to absorb such beauty and innocence.

You could say that all this watching and observing is being present. Being in the moment is the sweetness. Living day to day is how it should be. It’s how that innocent child lives. It’s where we, as programmed adults, need to be to remember that sweetness — to be the sweetness.

In your eyes, what is the sweetness to life?
