12 Lessons for 20 Something

In my 30’s I am thinking in a lot different way than I used to in my 20’s. Ten years back, I was naive and lived a life without any direction.

In my 20’s, I have made many blunders like any other 20 something. I was never honest with myself, but now in my 30’s I have come face to face with my biggest weaknesses.

To save your time and make your life easy, I have made a list of lessons from my experience that everyone should learn in their 20's.

1) Success is a myth

We all are focused on getting successful so much that we forget the beauty of the present moment.

The journey is way more important than gluing your eyes to success. Don’t take so much burden of getting successful on your shoulders; enjoy the process, and one day, you will realize that success is a myth.

Always love the process of reaching your target. All learning, evolution happens on the stage of the process.

Most people stop learning once they taste success, so don’t be in haste to taste success.

Every mountain climber never stops by reaching the top of the mountain; he/she targets another large mountain to climb. Human ambitions have no end, so don’t constrain yourself unnecessarily to get successful.

You will always crave more success and never be satisfied with your current situation. Remember, success is a myth.

2) You are the average of your friends you spent your time with

You must select your friends wisely. If you are 20 something, you must have already made friends who will be with you till last breath.

But I would advise you to filter out those friends who are not taking you in the right direction and are always wasting your time doing trivial things.

You will see your reflection in the people who are surrounding you. The company of wise people will enhance your capabilities, and the group of fools will dampen your spirit.

So, you must be extremely cautious while selecting friends.

3) Experiment with life

When you are 20 something, you don’t have much to lose but everything to gain. So do as many experiments with your career as you can.

Do experiments in your personal life by making new friends and meeting new people at a completely different place.

Please start your own business, and don’t get afraid to get failed at it. Do all the crazy experiments you can do in your 20's.

Remember, life in your 20’s is full of experiments.

4) Take the risk

When you get married and have a responsibility on your shoulder, you lose your risk-taking capability. At every risky move in your career, you think for millions of times.

You must be ready to risk your ordinary life if you want to live an extraordinary one.

In your 20s, you don’t think much about the risk as you are fearless, and you know you have nothing to lose.

So, taking risks is one of the most things to do in your 20's.

5) Don’t waste your time pleasing the opposite sex

During college days, every youngster desires to impress the opposite sex through his looks or talent. But once enter your 20s, one should not waste his/her life in impressing anyone.

The prime focus of your life must be YOU and not your girlfriend/boyfriend.

I am not against getting into any relationship, but it should be a small part of your life and not the center of your life.

If you are in your mid-20’s or late 20’s and you are still wasting most of your time impressing the opposite sex, then you are indeed heading in the wrong direction.

6) Build a skill

You should seek that one job you want to do for the rest of your life in your early twenties.

You should spend most of your time discovering your niche.

You never have to work a single day in your life if you develop one skill.

Believe it or not, but your skill will determine your future.

Beethoven, Michael Jackson, Sachin Tendulkar, and Michael Jordan are some of the most incredible people in the past who build skills and become unforgettable. They knew something about building skills which nobody knew.

Do not regret that you do not have any inborn talent; instead, focus on developing one great skill.

7) Have patience

I used to be such an impatient guy when I was 20 something, and I regret that attitude now.

I used to think success comes just after the hard work. But I forgot that hard work does not guarantee success; it only guarantees one thing that is learning.

I had boiled my blood so much, thinking about the lack of success in my life.

Patience is the key to prosperity in every aspect of life.

8) Balance in life

You must have some dreams to fulfill, and you must be working hard to achieve it. But while running behind your goals, you shouldn’t forget about the people in your surrounding.

Your family and friends play a vital part in shaping your life, so you must spend some time with them.

Keep a balance in your personal and work life. There is no joy in fulfilling any dream if you don’t have anyone with whom you can celebrate your victory.

One of the reasons for feeling lost in your 20’s is not maintaining a balance.

9) Acceptance

One of those things which I regret most is not accepting the situations as they are. I tried hard to fight against the circumstances which are out of my control.

So, I learned one thing in my 20’s; I can’t control the external event. Only my response to the events is in my control, nothing else. Hence you must learn to accept the external circumstances as they are.

10) Daily exercise

I know you must have read so many blogs regarding doing various kinds of exercise. Every motivational speaker or influencer recommends everyone to start a day with a workout.

I will not tell you something different from what you have already learned from other blogs or videos you have watched on YouTube.

Just remember that exercise you do during your 20’s is going to show its benefit in your 30’s or 40's.

Most of the population reach their peak bone density at around the age of 30. At this stage, our bones have maximum density and strength.

Building strong bones in your 20’s will prevent bone weakening later in life.

In your 30’s you will start losing your bone density slowly, and if you have not done proper exercise in your 20’s, you will suffer in the years after your 30's.

11) Start the habit of giving

What you give, you receive; this is the simple principle of the universe.

If you are amongst those who want to get everything in life without giving anything in return to society, you should not ask anything from nature or God or any higher energy; you have your belief.

Start saving money from whatever you earn or receive as pocket money for society’s unprivileged ones.

Once you start contributing to society, it will build a sense of responsibility within you. You will become less self-centered and will care about everyone in your surrounding.

12) Universal goal

Like any other 20 something, you must have goals that have no relevance to society’s betterment.

I think we all should set one goal for the world we are living in. We all are busy fulfilling our desire and don’t pay any heed to society.

You can contribute to society by paying heed to issues like child trafficking, women’s rights, racism, caste inequality, minor girl marriages, and many other grave matters.

You can write on such social issues or share videos on your social media platform to bring awareness among people.

Take baby steps in this direction but consistently.

I have learned the above things from my 20’s, and I wish it would help you shape your 20's.

There many other things to do and learn in your 20’s which you will gain by finding yourself in your 20's.
