Biden’s State of the Union Speech was the Roar of a Winner
He walked out with radiant smile, his joie de vivre in stark contrast with the stony looks of the GOP members who were assembled at President Biden’s State of the Union speech last week, ready to boo when they were ordered and to make their displeasure known at every positive statement Biden made — and at every standing ovation. But mostly they just looked embarrassed.
Biden came out swinging, invoking FDR’s famous 1941 speech when he spoke about Hitler’s murderous rampage through Europe. He described Roosevelt’s purpose then which was to “wake up the Congress and alert the American people that this was no ordinary moment.”
And then he brilliantly connected it to our present historical moment, vividly expressing his vow to helping defeat Russia — a stark contrast to Trump’s nodding and winking at the dictator and his recent threat to NATO members that he wouldn’t defend them if they hadn’t paid their bills.
But of course, Trump never pays his bills — he has a history of not paying his lawyers, people who work on his estates, and a his companies. And I will be shocked, shocked! (as Capt Renault said in Casablanca) if writer E. Jean Carroll ever sees a cent of the $83.3 million she was awarded in January in her defamation suit against him.
But I digress.
Back to brilliant Biden, who also highlighted the threats to democracy and the rise of authoritarianism across the globe, but most terrifyingly, at home.
“If anybody in this room thinks Putin will stop in Ukraine, I assure you he will not,” Biden said. And then a warning to anyone who underestimates America’s commitment: “We will not bow down. I will not bow down.”
“Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War have freedom and democracy been under assault at home as they are today,” Biden roared.
He also powerfully restated his commitment to women’s rights, especially after the appalling overturning of Roe V Wade in 2022 which has created such havoc and dire health threats for so many women.
“Clearly those bragging about overturning Roe v Wade have no. Clue about the power of women. But they found out when reproductive freedom was on the ballot and we won in 2022, 2023, and we’ll win again in 2024.”
You tell ’em Joe. Say it again Joe.
Fighting Joe is back. But actually he never left.
