In a Season of Rejection, Remember This

In a time in which people are getting fired, job hiring is frozen and relationships are falling apart, we are in a season of rejection.

But despite all of the times we hear “no” and the times we feel unworthy, we must keep in mind we are still important and loved. Additionally, I want you to remember this:

Remember this: Your worth does not come from anything external. Your worth is inherent. You are worthy because you were created for a purpose.

Remember this: You are loved and liked regardless. Rejection doesn’t mean you aren’t a great person. Rejection is so small, especially in comparison to all that you are. You are still all of the amazing qualities within you: smart, loving, strong and more.

Remember this: You are not any less smart or capable or strong. You can’t be defined by a job description or someone else’s opinion. Your life is made of too many experiences and qualities and successes for that.

Remember this: We’re in a global pandemic, the first of the Information Age. A lot is falling apart and life is far from normal. From misleading information to a quarantine to both jobs and lives lost, the world is full of hurt and lacking in opportunities.

Remember this: Many people have failed before finding success. Walt Disney was fired for “a lack of imagination.” Oprah was fired for “getting too emotionally invested in her stories.” These two embody only a couple of examples.

Remember this: Your life will unfold in the right timing and in the right ways. It’s hard to believe sometimes that our plan and timing aren’t the best. But haven’t things worked out in the past?

Remember this: You’ve been here before, and you can be here again. You got through it last time, and you’ll get through it this time.

Remember this: Just because someone got something you didn’t doesn’t mean that you didn’t deserve it. Other trivial factors exist. Competition is abundant. Multiple people can be qualified, but sometimes there’s only room for one.

Remember this: Nepotism is a thing. That’s not your fault. Maybe that’s why you didn’t get a position you wanted — you never know.

Remember this: You can let this experience teach you something that will take you to even better places. Figure out why you didn’t get what you were hoping for and how you can improve next time. Turn a negative into a positive.

Remember this: You are far from alone. Many people are getting fired and rejected now. The success we see on LinkedIn and social media sites is misleading.

Remember this: You have climbed taller mountains. You have conquered harder, more tiring, more emotional tasks.

Remember this: Being vulnerable and leaning into your loved ones can be a very powerful thing. You can lose your shame, realize how not alone you are and gain helpful connections.

I believe in you and others do too, more than you realize. This season of rejection won’t last forever. It’s time to believe in yourself and what you can achieve.
