Improve The World — By Improving Yourself First

When you are not happy with your life what do you do?

The consensus is to change something in your environment. Your job, your house, your city, your country, or even your partner. Or you might change your look with a new wardrobe or hairstyle.

The problem is that changing things outside of yourself only works if you use it as a catalyst for inner change.

And I don’t mean making yourself feel good for a while with temporary gratification, as nice as that can be sometimes!

If you make those changes, you still take the same you with you. The same inner problems remain and will re-surface at some point.

And let’s be honest, we all have some ‘inner’ problems, right?

I have the Proof

I have proved this to myself many times now.

I have lived in 3 different countries, moved interstate, and changed jobs and marriages many times.

Well, marriage only twice, thankfully!

Through much trial and error, I have figured out that changing my inner world is the one that works best. In fact, if I change that first, the outer tends to follow.

As within so without!

If I default to the ‘outside change’ setting, I find it does not last, and my old problems return to hijack my life. When I look to improve myself, my life starts to improve.

When I reprogram my inner landscape, my outer landscape takes on a new dimension. People even start to react differently toward me.

It seems like magic…..but it’s just that we cannot see the invisible mechanics at work behind the scenes.

How Can This Change The World?

The world has it back to front.

Like many strange things, it seems that ‘back to front’ has become the new norm. We have been trying to fix the world’s problems by fixing all the external issues.

With little or no regard for the internal.

We have been trying to change things by just re-arranging the furniture in the room and it isn’t working.

We vote in a new leader (if we can call them that) and, in the immortal words of the song ‘Don’t get fooled again’ by The Who, ‘meet the new boss, same as the old boss.’

We get the same results, just arranged differently. They appear different, but they are actually the same. It’s just smoke and mirrors.

What we need to do is take all the furniture out, clean the room, repaint it and buy new furniture. Metaphorically speaking.

We need to improve our collective self first.

The Tipping Point

This might sound a bit out there to some, but improving yourself can improve the world.

You see, on some level, we are all connected…sounds cliché….. I know!

When enough people start doing the same thing or believing the same thing, there is a tipping point, the hundredth monkey effect. Science has a real problem trying to verify this one.

But the evidence is there, and most of us have witnessed it in our lives at some point, some of us many times.

Malcolm Gladwell’s book ‘The Tipping Point — how little things can make a big difference tries to explain this phenomenon and describe the “mysterious” sociological changes that mark everyday life.

Claire Dederrer, of the Seattle Times, writes on the back cover of the book.

“The Tipping Point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire.”

We all know it happens.

The last 2 years of the pandemic have offered many examples of collective tipping points. Many of the consequences are only playing out now and causing social change.

Therefore, based on this principle improving ourselves is critical if we want the world to improve!

When you start to improve yourself, it might only be one drop in the ocean, but it has a ripple effect.

Before you know it, we hit critical mass and it becomes a downpour. That’s when we reach the tipping point and external things start to change.

Imagine if we did this on a consciousness level!
