Importance of Debating and MUNs

Students of today are like frogs living in a well. They are oblivious to the vast world around them and hence their dreams are also limited to the boundaries of their knowledge. In this situation, it is communicative activities like debates and MUNs that tinkers their brain to think wider and opens their eyes to the wide world of opportunities that exist around them.
Debating and learning
Debating helps you to develop essential critical thinking skills — the ability to make reasoned and well-thought-out arguments, in addition to questioning the evidence behind a particular stance or conclusion. From Cicero to Churchill, history’s great debaters have helped shape the world we live in and resolve many of society’s problems.
Chances are that you will get involved in small disagreements and differences of opinion often, due to differing opinions and beliefs. Debating, instead of arguing, can help you defuse a rapidly escalating situation. Rather than raising your voice, taking a step back and choosing your words wisely can make a world of difference. Often while imposing our views onto somebody, we forget to listen to what they are saying or look at the situation from their point of view, but when we debate we get a chance to examine every aspect of a topic and come to a conclusion. It not only helps you to learn deeply about something but it also enables you to give up your ego and accept your mistakes at times. Debating helps you to articulate your thoughts, whether you are talking about a complex mathematical theorem or about the plot of a fiction movie, debating makes it easier and more fluent.

MUNs

It was three years back during my first year in college when a friend of mine introduced me to MUNs. “Why should I do a MUN?” I asked this several times to several people. The answers vary from a way to learn about the world, which is essential in this era of globalization, to a place where social skills and leadership skills are developed. MUNs are a great way to improve your knowledge and communication skills, if that is the motive behind your participation in them. For a good learning experience, put in a little time researching about the MUN you are going to participate in and the agenda being discussed, and don’t get blinded by the big prizes at stake.

Speech and debate activities focus on critical thinking, the ability to clearly articulate thoughts and ideas, to answer questions logically with clarity, and to think on one’s feet. Additionally, students develop interpersonal skills such as conflict resolution, assertiveness, and listening to peers. These important life skills empower youth to become engaged citizens, skilled professionals, and honorable leaders in our society. — National Speech and Debate Association
The Key Factors
While debating, even if you don’t agree with a stance on principle, argument matters. The way you present at a debate is as important as your content. Deep knowledge of the subject, confidence, and communication skills are the key factors in a debate. You should always know your audience and maintain a good posture and use your gestures appropriately. Don’t make the content too complicated, always try to keep it simple and interactive. Make your points short and crisp. The jury shouldn’t search for the arguments from a basket of crumbled words, instead it should have been put in straight words in front of them.
Debating not only touches on political and social topics, but it can also help individuals acquire a totally different worldview as well. Debating means students study topics that they wouldn’t normally consider, meaning they have a deeper understanding of the society and the world in which we live in. An expanded worldview also encourages students to be proud of their talents and achievements, in addition to being more appreciative of the opportunities that await them.
Being more conscious of the world we live in will help you stand in good stead for the future — even if you don’t win the debate this time.
Debates and MUNs play an important role in a student’s life. Not only does it help a student to improve their rational and critical thinking, but also it helps them to take a firm stance on the issue they are presented with — which in turn instils in them a sense of poise and confidence. Thus, participating in debates and MUNs at a younger age becomes even more important.
