Importance of Contentment In Life

A Greek Proverb says, ‘’Contentment is worth more than riches.’’

Mariam Webster defines contentment as a state of happiness and satisfaction It is a kind of being fulfilled that is pleasant to one’s being, a state of joyous gratitude. Most people can confuse this with never desiring anything more. Nothing can be further from the truth, it is just being grateful for where or what you have now while expecting what is to come.

What Are The Attributes Of Contentment?

Focus On People

The major attribute of contentment is being focused on people, other than on things. This is particularly important for those of us working as heads of Departments, or if we have others that we supervise. It is important to put our focus on helping them to achieve as an individual, rather than focusing on the profit of the organisation. It has been discovered that employees leaving managers, not an organisation is an example of people over profit.

‘’The valuation of people over profit impedes human rights across the world.’’ Opal Tometi

What about all other relationships? Our emphasis should be on building a good relationship first and foremost, over any other physical benefits that may arise. We have seen a relationship shattered because of the love of money, pleasures or whatever, without any other useful consideration.

For those of us who are parents, it is important to be good examples of what contentment is. We must remember that our kids look up to what we do, more than what we say. Let us also imbibe a culture of contentment and appreciation into them. The saying, catch them young and early is definitely appropriate here.

Stop The Comparison Culture

Most of us look at our colleagues and wonder why we are lagging behind. Yet each one of us has a different life plan or journey. The bad thing about comparison is that we only are able to see the surface, not what goes on inside. We only probably see the position, the affluence, the huge pay, and the big house, while we are still struggling.

‘’Contentment is the greatest form of wealth.’’ Archaya Nagajuna

A story is told of a housewife, who always noticed that when the couple next door drops off his wife, he parks, and turns around to the passenger seat to open the door for his wife. This woman thought how lucky the neighbour’s wife is, with such a very respectful man. What she doesn’t know is that the passenger door is faulty and can only be opened from the outside. And she has taken for granted the privilege of being a homemaker, who is being cared for by her husband.

Watch Out For The Type Of Friends You Associate With

The great book once said, ‘’Bad association spoilt useful habits.’’ So it is very important to ensure you associate with people who can lift you up. It is so easy to want to belong to the people you associate with, so you will not even notice that you are following the wrong path.

‘’I hate two-faced people. It makes it difficult for me to know which one to slap first.’’ Pinterest

Choosing your friends is really very simple. How do you feel in the company of a particular person? Is he/she comforting to your soul, or you are uncomfortable with the person? That is your intuition nudging you. Listen. Cut off those you are not comfortable with.

Feed Your Spirit

Whether we want to believe it or not, we are spiritual being on an earthly journey. Humanity is not left without help on this vast expanse of the Universe. But one has to connect. The connection is not forced on us. We still have a choice here as well. If we seek, we will find.

‘’Just as you feed your body daily, make it a point to also feed your spirit.’’ Luke 9:23

There are so many ways to connect with your inner core. Pray, sing, walk-in nature, observe, listen or sometimes just sit in silence to listen and reflect and do wonders to the soul. No matter how busy we are, it is good to earmark a day of rest/connection to our inner core. Find the one connection that suits you. The Almighty Father is nearer than you think.

Practise Gratitude

It is difficult not to mention gratitude with contentment. They go hand-in-hand. The importance of gratitude in our mental health is huge, apart from the fact that gratitude opens up an avalanche of blessings. Relish in what you have, and say thanks to those who are warm, kind and generous to us. Extend such to others. Enjoy simple pleasures.

‘’Gratitude turns what we have into enough.’’ Aesop

Live in the moment by careful observation of little blessings from The Universe and people around you. There is always something to be grateful for.

The Benefits Of Contentment

Life Is Not A Race

Whether you want to believe it or not, most people are constantly living as if life is a race, and the bigger the better. That is a bigger house, a bigger car, a bigger everything. And the result is we work ourselves to death. And in the process, build up stress that ends up in chronic illnesses.

All these are eliminated if we live with contentment, as it teaches us to value and enjoy what we already have. Contentment enables us to reflect on our blessings, rather than on our greed.

Differentiate Wants From Needs

Living with contentment will enable us to separate our wants from our needs. When we are clear about this, we are able to save money from buying unnecessary things. Remember wants are those things, though good to have, but, we can do without. Needs are however essential to our survival. Sometimes these two interfaces, but our particular situation will tell us.

Not overburdening our lives with unnecessary gadgets enables us to live a life of simplicity and stress-free, not chasing after the wind.

In conclusion

Living a life of contentment purges the mind of the toxins that are detrimental to our health and happiness. It teaches us the practical life of pure joy, happiness and simplicity. A life to give and receive love. Would you rather practice contentment today? Bet you will.
