Imagine You Live in the Desert
Imagine that you are living in the desert. Respond to the following prompts:
- Living in the desert is tough. Why are you living in the desert? Create a story and a context. How did you start living here?
- How do you make sure that you have enough water and food? What type of technologies, shelters, or storing systems do you use?
- Write down your typical day as a nomad in the desert. What do you do from the moment you wake up until you go to bed? Listen to this music as you immerse yourself in the desert environment.
- Describe the environment as vividly as you can. What do you see around you? (dune, camels, cacti, mesquite, creosote bush, sand, the sun, etc.) What would it be like living in this solitude? Listen to this or this desert music as you do this exercise.
- Write two adventure stories that are set in the desert. Imagine the first one is set in the ancient past, and the second one is set in the post-apocalyptic future.
- Write a story where a group of people turns the desert into a lush oasis. For inspiration, check out this article.
- Some of the most famous cities in the world are set in the desert (or close to it). Think of Las Vegas and Dubai. Imagine a new futurist city where you can create something outstanding in the middle of the desert. Describe this imaginary city and its world-famous attractions.
- Write a science fiction story set in the desert. Watch this video to get into the desert mood.
9. Due to global warming, there will be a lot of droughts in the next decades. Higher temperatures will produce wildfires that eliminate trees. Places like California will turn into deserts as climate change continues to take hold. Write a science fiction story that takes place in 2060 in California.
10. Write a story where an individual escapes from the city and seeks the divine in the desert. What does this individual escape from? What happens next?
11. Think of at least 8 activities you can do in the desert (e.g. riding a camel, watching the sunset, stargazing). You can get inspiration here or here.
12. Imagine that you are a scientist making new discoveries in the desert. What do you find? You might get inspiration from the videos below.
13. Imagine that you can shoot your own documentary, like this one. What would you like to shoot? Create a synopsis. What will be the title of this documentary?
