Imagine You Encounter Your Nemesis
Nemesis is the name of a beautiful Greek mythology Goddess. Zeus was in love with Nemesis, but she did not want him. Nemesis transformed into more than a thousand different forms to confront Zeus, challenging him to new heights and challenges each time. Nemesis believed “no one should ever have too much good”, cursing those blessed with countless gifts.
The presence of a Nemesis challenges us to new heights and allows us to achieve our greatest potential.
In this exercise, you will imagine that you are a hero of your own life and you are about to face off your nemesis. Please respond to the following prompts:
- What is the mission of your life? What do you stand for? How can you summarize your life philosophy in a few sentences?
- Who is your nemesis or adversary? How do you define your nemesis? Is this a person, an institution, or a mindset that you are facing off? Why? Summarize your stance; i.e. where you stand.
- Write down a story where you are the hero and you are facing off your enemy. This might be a story about courage, vulnerability, adventure, and being true to yourself.
- What are the lessons that you have learned from your enemies? Write down a list of at least 10 lessons.
- Having a nemesis can make you effective and successful since it forces you to achieve your best potential. You then remind yourself not to be complacent, be alert, and have a laser-sharp focus on your goals. Write an inspirational letter to yourself explaining how you will deal with your nemesis, transcend petty concerns and animosities, and achieve your own greatness.
- You sometimes feel burdened by your enemies. Whenever you hold a massive grudge against them, you are unintentionally giving your enemies undeserved power. Why do you allow them to live rent-free in your brain and eat you away at night? You need to let go of the actions and harm that your enemies have unleashed. This exercise will help you to get over your enemies. You will write a letter where you will acknowledge your pain and suffering, and turn it into wisdom and grace. How can you create positive change and outcomes from your experiences? What have your learned? How can you use this knowledge to create good and make the world a better place? How can you act and lead with compassion? How can you act with grace and forgiveness?
- In Sufi philosophy, your nemesis is yourself, called ‘nafs’ (ego, psyche). Your worst enemy is hiding within yourself, and that enemy is your false ego. Your ego is stubborn, biased, greedy, jealous, resistant, and stingy. If you do not struggle against yourself, you will be a slave to your ego. If you want to achieve great things in your life, you need to start changing yourself for the better. You can elevate yourself through constant learning, openness, humility, curiosity, and growth. Think of at least 12 small actions you can take to transcend your ego.
